According to Vasari he is the boy on the steps in his teacher Pontormo's 'Joseph with Jacob in Egypt', also in the National Gallery. On loan from Kraków's historic Jagiellonian University, one of Europe’s oldest founded in the 14th century, this is the first time that we’ve exhibited a painting by a Polish artist. GEERTGEN TOT SINT JANS (ABOUT 1455/65; DIED ABOUT 1485/95 The name Geertgen tot Sint Jans means 'little Gerard of Saint John', and refers to the Brethren of Saint John at Haarlem, a lay order to which the artist presumably belonged. Not much is known of his life; works are attributed to him mostly on stylistic grounds. Van Mander is the main source of information about Geertgen, and writes that he was born in Leiden and trained by Isaac van OuwaterSIR THOMAS LAWRENCE

His translation of the Bible from Greek into Latin is known as the Vulgate, and it is still used by the Catholic Church today. Antonello offers a peek into the saint’s environment through a fictive stone wall pierced by a broad BUILDING THE PICTURE The predella panels are now dispersed among four museums, but this one was originally to the right of centre, immediately below the figure of Saint Zenobius in the main panel. Saint Zenobius (about 350–about 424) was a patron saint of Florence, notable as a local saint who claimed to be a member of the elite Florentine Girolami family, and as an illustrious bishop. Take One Picture is our national programme for primary schools, which aims to inspire a lifelong love of art and learning. Every year, we take one picture from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in primary classrooms. Activity around each focus painting takes place in four stages: Close. INITIAL TEACHER EDUCATION These five-day cultural placements are offered in partnership with higher education providers, or school-based training providers. Participants either spend five days at the National Gallery or split their time between the National Gallery and a regional partnergallery.

CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD: JAN MATEJKO'S COPERNICUS Jan Matejko’s (1838–1893) epic painting ‘Astronomer Copernicus’ unites two of Poland’s most famous figures. On loan from Kraków's historic Jagiellonian University, one of Europe’s oldest founded in the 14th century, this is the first time that we’ve exhibited a painting by a Polish artist. ANTONELLO DA MESSINA Born in the fourth century, Saint Jerome was a scholar and a monk. His translation of the Bible from Greek into Latin is known as the Vulgate, and it is still used by the Catholic Church today. Antonello offers a peek into the saint’s environment through a fictive stone wall pierced by a broad BUILDING THE PICTURE The predella panels are now dispersed among four museums, but this one was originally to the right of centre, immediately below the figure of Saint Zenobius in the main panel. Saint Zenobius (about 350–about 424) was a patron saint of Florence, notable as a local saint who claimed to be a member of the elite Florentine Girolami family, and as an illustrious bishop.
