WordsLeave a comment MENTAL ILLNESS: AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Throughout history, the approach towards mental illness has changed significantly. This is due to the fact that social norms were an influence, and social norms are forever a changing aspect in society. The changes in mental illness range from the Stone Age to the present day. In the Stone Age the method of dealing with mental illness was to chip away parts of the skull, to have the evil spirits leave the person. It then moved onto the era of demonology gods, and magic. In this time period the main way of treating mental illnesses was exorcism. The Greeks began researching into mental illness, and finding reasons behind mental illness. Plato (429-347 BC) claimed that mentally ill people were not to blame for criminal acts, and that hospital care should be provided for the mentally ill. In the Middle Ages and the Middle East the continuation of the scientific view of mental illness (like the Greek). As history progressed, the main occurrences that were considered abnormal behaviour were things that did not follow the general line of normality in the society. This is why the treatment of mental illness has been controversial and ever changing throughout history.By sarairene17

ROLE OF CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF BEHAVIOUR A dimension is the perspectives of a culture based on cultural norms. Hofstede (1973) asked various IBM workers (who were international) to fill out a survey on morale in the work place. His key focus was the differences submitted by the employees of different countries. He argues that cultural dimensions help facilitate communicate between cultures. From this study Hofstede concluded the dimensions of national culture. This includes power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long term orientation, andindulgence.
The first dimension is individualism versus collectivism. Individualism is when people are considered as individuals in terms of their culture. For example, the people would look after themselves specifically or immediate family. Collectivism is the opposite, this is when people are considered a part of a large group. For example the consideration of extended family. They are raised around a collectivecohesive group.
Uncertainty versus avoidance is another dimension to consider. This is society’s tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity. This discusses to what extent a culture programs its members to feel comfortable or uncomfortable in an unstructured situation. For example, Bond (1988) found that Chinese culture replaces uncertainty dimension with confucian work dynamism. This is instead of focusing on the truth, they focus on virtue. On the other hand, Hofstede found that countries such as Finland, France, Germany, and the United States value personal steadiness and stability more. In conclusion, I believe that the culture in which a person grows up is very important in determining their behaviour. This is because it shapes the way people view certain situations, and how they would dealwith them.

WordsLeave a comment SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY & BANDURA (1961) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF STUDY: Bandura did a study on children to see whether or not they would imitate aggressive behaviour and whether same-sex models affected their level of imitation. There were three groups of children. Group 1 had 6 girls and 6 boys which were exposed to an adult being aggressive towards a giant inflatable doll (Bobo). The second group consisted of 6 girls and 6 boys who witnessed an adult calmly playing with toys. The third group was the control group so they had no model. The results showed that the children would imitate the aggressive behaviour, or imitate the calm behaviour. They were more likely to imitate the model if the model was of the same-sex. METHODOLOGICAL LIMITATIONS & ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: These was carried out in a laboratory therefore it was not naturalistic and so hence not realistic. The children may have acted in a specific way because they wanted the researcher to be content with the way they behaved. The adult did not have exactly the same behaviour with the doll each time so therefore a change could have affected the way the children imitated the adult. IMPORTANCE OF THIS STUDY IN UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY: The importance of this study is that it proves the social learning theory. It was the first study to prove the theory. It also changed the thinking of people because it proved that aggression viewed can be imitated, rather than be served as a way to purge the aggressivebehaviour.
