There are various myths concerned with the formation of Devil’s Dyke and the huge rock named the ‘Goldstone’ which was so named because of the hints of gold in its makeup, The legend goes that when the Devil was digging a trench which would allow the sea to flood the many local churches, he stubbed his toe on the rock and in anger kicked it over the hills. CODRINGTON HOUSE
Yes, this property was owned by the infamous Codrington family, racist bigots and savagely cruel slave owners of plantations in Antigua. They were considered exceptionally brutal even then. Their huge wealth was built on brutal oppression of people, where they sanctioned kidnap, torture, rape and held hundreds captive on thoe private island of WATTS, HAMPSON, DIPLOCK, CARRON For my own part, I can also add that Alfred George Carron was a Driver / Corporal in the 38th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, Reg. My name is John Feek and I remember most of the people in this photo, although in truth I would probably pass them all in the street without a second glance. I have not seen any of them since a Stanmer Old Boys football reunión in around 1973, although I still have fond memories of my old schoolmates. I have lived in Spain for the past twenty years and get back to the UK very rarely now, but still look back on my childhood days with great affection. By John Feek (03/08/2019)*

Hallo again Jo. I knew your mum when she was expecting you so technically I’ve met you………. I did wonder if you were the baby I knew of and now I know that you were! I remember your mum as a very vivacious and cheerful person with an infectious laugh. I only remember Len Thompson as a tall man with wavy dark hair. By Jean McCutcheon (03/08/2019)*

Hi Jean. Just wondered as my dad was Len Thompson and I was not aware of this until I was 40. I have no idea what he looks like. Glad you remember my mum though. Thanks Jo

RE: FIRST SCOUT CAMP I am currently researching the names on the Hurstpierpoint war memorials and in connection with both Roger Alan Piper and another name I came across your site. I can add quite a lot more information about Roger, including a photograph of him. I can also confirm that the information you have above about Roger is correct. The family later moved to Hurst where his father ran a successful business, hence the reason for his inclusion on the Hurst war memorials. If someone would like to contact me, I can then pass across what I have.By Mary Norris

WATERHALL GOLF COURSE Anyone know what’s happening at Waterhall Golf Course? I’m not talking about the possible closure, although info on that would also be welcome, my question relates to the crops in an adjacent field? I’ve played golf there a few times this spring/summer and in the spring noticed that two very small fields were being prepared for planting. Strange but these areas were not normal field size, much much smaller. The preparation was meticulous, and then white fencing was erected. As spring progressed I noticed that bird scaring guns were in use, which seemed strange for two very small unimportant fields. The two fields can’t really be seen from the road, only from a few of the tee boxes. I’ve attached an image taken from the 16th tee box of one of the small fields. I have my suspicions, but doesanyone know?

RE: MORMON CHURCH
Maiben’s carriage yard and stables were in the Jubilee Street area of Brighton in the 19th century. All around there are still reminders of the ‘carriage trade’ as the pubs are the Waggon & Horses, The Black Horse and both the nearby Dome and Corn Exchange were stables and a riding school. Until about 20 years ago behind The Waggon & Horses was a mews with existing stable accommodation. Just up Church St there is the NCP carpark…modern day stables!By Geoffrey Mead
