EWART OAKESHOTT: THE MAN AND HIS LEGACY -- MYARMOURY.COM Oakeshott's blade typology, as with his typologies for pommels and crosses, is meant to be a starting point. As he knew all too well, many swords do not fit neatly into a type. Some simply do not fit at all. Oakeshott reclassified others when he published new works. EWART OAKESHOTT: THE MAN AND HIS LEGACY -- MYARMOURY.COM Oakeshott presents the concept of families in the introduction of his Records of the Medieval Sword. The entire section is often skipped as readers jump straight to the photos (the "records") of medieval swords. The previous typology classes seek to break the sword MAIL: UNCHAINED -- MYARMOURY.COM In Russia, mail was known as kol'chataya bronya or kol'chuga. The term bronya is a likely derivative of the Germanic brunja and French broigne. A mail hauberk was called baidana, apparently derived from the Arabic badan. One type of Russian and Turkish hauberk overlappedat
THE SCHIAVONA AND ITS INFLUENCES -- MYARMOURY.COM The schiavona has its principle bars all attaching at the ends of the crossbar and traveling up to the knuckle-bow in a diagonal manner, askew to the plane of the blade rather than parallel as on other basket-hilt variations. The entire basket is generally left free-floating and unattached to the pommel. HORSEMAN'S AXE -- MYARMOURY.COM Haft thickness: 5/8 inch. Haft length: 21 1/4 inches. Replica created by Arms & Armor of Minnesota. Handling Characteristics. This axe is an interesting study in handling. The overall length is rather short, but a lot of weight is concentrated in that short length. When swung, this axe delivers a huge impact. THE BALLOCK DAGGER -- MYARMOURY.COM The name ballock dagger is derived from the phallic shape of the hilt (the two lobes of the guard combined with the shape of the grip) and the 14th century warrior's propensity for wearing the dagger directly in front of the girdle. Another term, coined by Victorian-era historians in an apparent effort to downplay the sexual connotation of the dagger's form, is the kidney dagger.
