I decided to start this blog to compile my findings of several years of DNA testing, comparing results and researching the origins of Afrikaner DNA after becoming interested in my own possible non-white South African ancestry. ------------------------- My maternal grandfather was born and raised in South Africa and it is through him my mother had always suspected there were possibly ‘black’ genes. He is a mix of British and Dutch/Afrikaner. In turn, his maternal grandmother was said to be ‘from the Cape’ which in the mid 19th century is quite a expansive area and her (my gggrandmother’s parents are an enigma. It is because of the lack of genealogical information that I became very interested and excited about testing my DNA with 23andme to see if I could find some answers, indeed, I certainly was able to delve deeper in my ancestry genetically! That was just the beginningthough.
Below are Mine (Kirsten) and my Mother’s (Gail’s) 23andme Ancestry Compositions showing the chromosome view. Note the Sub-Saharan African segment on chromosome 19 and the South Asian segments on chromosomes 4 and 5.SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN
Below shows the ancestry of two South Africans with the same Sub-Saharan African segment on chromosome 19: Here’s how we match – right on the segment, meaning we share a common ancestor who was African (West African). Likely a ‘free black or indentured servant at the Cape in the late 17th century or 18th century (early colonial Cape Town).SOUTH ASIAN
Below are the South Asian segments shared between myself, my mother and three ‘White’ South Africans: First, their Ancestry compositions showing the segments of South Asian where sharing occurs on chromosomes 4 and 5:Advertisements
