In addition to the gift from Edvard Munch, MUNCH is also home to the collections of Rolf Stenersen, Amaldus Nielsen and Ludvig O. Ravensberg. In 1989, he became artistic and administrative director of the contemporary orchestra BIT20 (1989-2010), and later Opera Vest (1993-2005) and Bergen National Opera (2005-2010). MUNCH PAINTINGS THE WORLD REJECTED A rejection by a friend. Max Linde, a wealthy physician and art collector who was a friend of Munch, commissioned a series of paintings for the children’s room in his home. MONUMENTAL ART AT EKELY In one of these projects Edvard Munch adapted motifs from the Frieze of Life into twelve monumental wall paintings for the Freia chocolate factory at Rodeløkka in Oslo, during the course of 1922. This is in line with how Munch related to his motifs: He constantly created new versions and allowed “old” pictures to form the basis for new compositions.

In conjunction with the exhibition Call Me by My Name, MUNCH has invited director Gabriella Moses to interpret Edvard Munch’s painting of Sultan Abdul Karem with a green scarf into a film. In the movie More than a Subject, Moses explores the experience of having to perform blackness and how being observed as an artistic subject shape one’s sense of identity. In his large villa at Ekely Munch’s pictures, tools and books were scattered all over MUNCHMUSEET ON THE MOVE Munchmuseet on the Move – Contemporary Art is a program of art projects by younger artists in different temporary spaces, indoors and outdoors in the museums’s neighbourhood. The art projects are anchored in the local context and characterised by dialogue with different institutions and people living and working in the area. THE SICK CHILD
Edvard Munch exhibited the first painted version of The Sick Child at the Annual Autumn Exhibition in Kristiania (today Oslo) in 1886, when he was 23 years old. The coarse painting method was met with criticism by many, and enthusiasm from a select few, but the picture gained sufficient attention to mark Munch’s breakthrough as an artist. EDVARD MUNCH'S CHILDHOOD Edvard Munch grew up in Kristiania, today’s Oslo, as the second of five siblings. His mother Laura died of tuberculosis when Edvard was five, and her sister Karen moved into the household to care for the children and their father Christian. STONES TO THE BURDEN Marthe Ramm Fortun’s art project Stones to the Burden consists of a sculpture, a publication with commissioned texts alongside the artist’s travelogue, and a performance on Oslo’s number 20 bus route in August 2016. Tøyen as a site is the point of departure for this project, which investigates the dynamic between artist, audience and the
