THIS IS MUNCH
22 October 2021, a brand new museum opens by Oslo’s waterfront, tailor-made for the worlds largest collection of art by Edvard Munch. The new MUNCH will be the number one destination for experiencing Edvard Munch’s life and art.THE COLLECTION
In addition to the gift from Edvard Munch, MUNCH is also home to the collections of Rolf Stenersen, Amaldus Nielsen and Ludvig O. Ravensberg. Together the four collections, which were all donated by private individuals, provide us with insight into a unique period of 10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT EDVARD MUNCH 1. He didn’t always take care of his art. In his large villa at Ekely Munch’s pictures, tools and books were scattered all over the place. Many of his pictures were even stored outdoors, and human footprints and traces of dog paws have been found on both prints anddrawings.
CONTACT - MUNCHMUSEET Stein Olav Henrichsen (b. 1954) has since 2010 been director of MUNCH. In 1989, he became artistic and administrative director of the contemporary orchestra BIT20 (1989-2010), and later Opera Vest (1993-2005) and Bergen National Opera (2005-2010). MUNCH PAINTINGS THE WORLD REJECTED A rejection by a friend. Max Linde, a wealthy physician and art collector who was a friend of Munch, commissioned a series of paintings for the children’s room in his home. EDVARD MUNCH ART AWARD The Edvard Munch Art Award (EMAA) is an acknowledgement of Edvard Munch's historical significance and enduring relevance to contemporaryculture.
MONUMENTAL ART AT EKELY In one of these projects Edvard Munch adapted motifs from the Frieze of Life into twelve monumental wall paintings for the Freia chocolate factory at Rodeløkka in Oslo, during the course of 1922. This is in line with how Munch related to his motifs: He constantly created new versions and allowed “old” pictures to form the basis for newcompositions.
THE SICK CHILD
Edvard Munch exhibited the first painted version of The Sick Child at the Annual Autumn Exhibition in Kristiania (today Oslo) in 1886, when he was 23 years old. The coarse painting method was met with criticism by many, and enthusiasm from a select few, but the picture gained sufficient attention to mark Munch’s breakthrough as an artist.TOWARDS THE FOREST
