The Mahler Project. Our 39 th season, the 21 st with Music Director William Schrickel, starts with this free online video event! Schrickel hosts an exploration of composer Gustav Mahler and his 5 th Symphony. Using musical excerpts played by MSO musicians and interviews with MSO collaborators, including conductor Osmo Vänskä, composer Carol Barnett, and mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski, Schrickel MAHLER “RESURRECTION” TRANSLATION Mahler “Resurrection” Translation. SHAKESPEARE & CHAMINADE Shakespeare & Chaminade. This concert is postponed to Sunday, November 22, 2020. We will perform the same program but only one performance, at Roseville Lutheran Church. Mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski returns for her fourth solo appearance with the MSO to sing the world premiere of Will’s Ladies, Minneapolis composer Carol Barnett’s setting of VICTOR ZUPANC, COMPOSER Victor Zupanc. Victor Zupanc’s music for The Twelve Dancing Princesses was written on a commission from the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the St. Olaf Orchestra. The MSO’s October performance, featuring writer Kevin Kling as narrator, is the world premiere. Please see Victor’s bio at victorzupanc.com. MAHLER NO. 4 TEXT & TRANSLATION The Heavenly Life from The Youth’s Magic Horn, a collection of German folk songs and poems first published between 1805 and 1808: Mahler 4 Text & Translation. THE COMPOSER IS DEAD! Jake Endres returns to join William Schrickel and the MSO in Nathaniel Stookey’s entertaining musical whodunit, The Composer Is Dead, bringing to life writer Lemony Snicket’s charming murder mystery that cleverly introduces the audience to all the instruments of the orchestra while unearthing the identity of the person or persons who killed the (formerly) living composer. WILLIAM SCHRICKEL, MUSIC DIRECTOR William Schrickel has been the Music Director of the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra since 2000. A former Assistant Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, he was also Music Director of the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra from 2002-2008 and received a prestigious Award for Adventurous Programming from ASCAP and the League of AmericanOrchestras in 2006.

Each program features music by a living composer: premieres by Carol Barnett (a Shakespearean song cycle created for mezzo-soprano Clara Osowski, with actress Christina Baldwin as soliloquist), Polina Nazaykinskaya, John Orfe, and the setting of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale by writer/storyteller Kevin Kling and composer Victor Zupanc. Mahler’s iconic 5th Symphony, Bizet’s _Carmen_, and Tchaikovsky’s _Romeo and Juliet_ share the spotlight with concerti by Shostakovich and Chaminade, witty ballet music by Dominick Argento, and Nathaniel Stookey and Lemony Snicket’s hilarious _The Composer is Dead_, narrated by Jake Endres.Come and join us!
