THE FLAGELLATION OF CHRIST The Flagellation of Christ by Peter Paul Rubens is a carefully elaborated sketch or modello for the painting of the same name in the Dominican church, which is the present St Pauls Church in Antwerp. CHRIST CARRYING THE CROSS Christ Carrying the Cross is one of the masters late works and one of the most fascinating compositions in western art. Here the artist has omitted all sense of space. Yet again Hermaphroditus rejected her, so Salmacis prayed to the gods that she would be united with him until the end of time. ALLEGORY OF THE FIVE SENSES Each man in this painting symbolizes one of the five senses. The old man with glasses and a mirror represents Sight. The chitarrone, a type of bass lute, stands for Sound. The blind man is symbolic of the sense of Touch. The jolly man with a glass of wine in his hand portrays Taste, and the elegant young man with a pipe and garlic, Smell. The garlic, wine, music and mirror refer to the fallacy PARASTOU FOROUHAR: WRITTEN ROOM Iranian artist Parastou Forouhar was born in 1962 in Tehran and became part of the Iranian diaspora in 1992. She lives and works in Offenbach (Germany). In 2017 she created a mural enitled 'Written Room' in the entrance hall of the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK). ALLEGORY OF THE SECOND BENCH OF ALDERMEN OF ‘GEDELE’ In 1627 the town In 1627 the town council of Ghent commissioned this monumental painting by the painter Theodoor Rombouts of Antwerp. It was intended for the Alderman’s courtroom of ‘Gedele’. The Second Bench of Aldermen was similar to our present justice of the peace court and also the competent authority for the care of orphans. FROM BOSCH TO MAGRITTE The Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK) revised the presentation of its permanent collection in the autumn of 2017. Ten years after the renovation of the museum building (2002-2007) we took a new, fresh look at our permanent collection. In the permanent galleries, visitors can explore a thematic display of six centuries of Western art, featuring unseen additions to the collection and new work THE LADIES OF THE BAROQUE What was the role of women artists in Late Renaissance and Baroque Italy? How did they come into their own artistically in a male-dominated world? Such is the premise of the fall exhibition of the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK). Featuring some fifty paintings, the exhibition sheds light on the critical role of women painters in Italy from 1550 to 1680. Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1652 PERSPECTIVE II, MANET'S BALCONY Perspective II, Manet's Balcony. 1950. oilpainting: 84 cm x 65 cm. 1961-A. René Magritte was one of the most important representatives of Surrealism in Belgium. Although his work is disquieting, ironic and poetic, it is rarely blatantly confrontational. Italian artist Medardo Rosso (1858–1928) is hailed as the pioneer of modern sculpture. At the crossroads of two centuries, Rosso stands as the forefather of Futurism and as influencer of the libertarian art movements of the 1960s. The exhibition in the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK) shed light on the creative process of one of the major figures of late 19th- early 20th-century art. THE FLAGELLATION OF CHRIST The Flagellation of Christ by Peter Paul Rubens is a carefully elaborated sketch or modello for the painting of the same name in the Dominican church, which is the present St Pauls Church in Antwerp. The large panel dates back to around 1614. It is one of a series of fifteen panels painted by eleven artists including Maerten de Vos, Anthony van Dyck and Jacques Jordaens. THE NYMPH SALMACIS AND HERMAPHRODITE The story of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus is a chapter in Ovids Metamorphoses. The nymph Salmacis fell in love with Hermaphroditus, Hermes and Aphrodites son. Hermaphroditus rejected her but Salmacis managed to outwit him in the water. Yet again Hermaphroditus rejected her, so Salmacis prayed to the gods that she would be united with him until the end of time. LIBRARY AND DOCUMENTATION CENTRE Visiting. ALLEGORY OF THE FIVE SENSES Each man in this painting symbolizes one of the five senses. The old man with glasses and a mirror represents Sight. The chitarrone, a type of bass lute, stands for Sound. The blind man is symbolic of the sense of Touch. The jolly man with a glass of wine in his hand portrays Taste, and the elegant young man with a pipe and garlic, Smell. The garlic, wine, music and mirror refer to the fallacy PARASTOU FOROUHAR: WRITTEN ROOM Iranian artist Parastou Forouhar was born in 1962 in Tehran and became part of the Iranian diaspora in 1992. She lives and works in Offenbach (Germany). In 2017 she created a mural enitled 'Written Room' in the entrance hall of the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK). ALLEGORY OF THE SECOND BENCH OF ALDERMEN OF ‘GEDELE’ In 1627 the town In 1627 the town council of Ghent commissioned this monumental painting by the painter Theodoor Rombouts of Antwerp. It was intended for the Alderman’s courtroom of ‘Gedele’. The Second Bench of Aldermen was similar to our present justice of the peace court and also the competent authority for the care of orphans. The figures in this allegory are a tribute to those who HEAD OF PIERRE DE WISSANT The Head of Pierre de Wissant is a monumental version of one of the burgers of Calais, the sculpture group Auguste Rodin worked on from 1884 to 1895. The theme is based on an historical event that took place in the fourteenth century, when a group of prominent citizens offered themselves to save their town, which was under siege by theEnglish.
