Herb Zurkowsky, Montreal Gazette Updated: February 29, 2020 Share Adjust Comment Print The Impact began its Major League Soccer regular-season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday afternoon at Olympic Stadium. Maximiliano Urruti scored the winning goal in the 80th minute, delighting the crowd of 21,006. Teal Bunbury opened the scoring for New England early in the game before Romell Quioto tied the score in the first half for Montreal. The Impact was playing its second game in less than 72 hours after clinching its two-game, aggregate-goal Round of 16 Champions League series against Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa on Wednesday night. Considering that, it was refreshing the home side had anything left to produce, even this early in the season.
Nonetheless, although relinquishing the opening goal early in the match, Montreal held a wide edge in possession over the opening 45 minutes, controlling the ball for more than 64 per cent of the half. New England opened the scoring in the 13th minute on a three-way play that originated from a corner kick. Impact’s Rod Fanni (7) challenges DeJuan Jones (24) of the New England Revolution as the ball is shot toward goalkeeper Clement Diop at Olympic Stadium on Saturday, Febr. 29, 2020, in Montreal. Minas Panagiotakis / Getty Images Gustavo Bou, who scored nine goals in only 14 appearances following his midseason arrival in 2019, started the play off the corner. He sent a short pass to Cristian Penilla, who sent a long cross to Bunbury. Bunbury scored on a low shot to the right of goalkeeper Clément Diop, who had no chance on the play. The score came far too easily and rekindled memories of last season, when the Impact succumbed to far too many set plays. Bunbury caught the Impact defenders standing around and it certainly appeared as through Luis Binks missed his cover on the play. The visitors almost made it 2-0 moments later off another corner, forcing Diop to punch the ball away off a header. The Impact came close in the 27th, Urruti attempting to convert a drop pass from the top of the box. And Diop made another nice stop a minute later on a low shot from DeJuan Jones. Montreal tied the score in the 37th. Urruti started the play on a corner-kick. The ball went to newcomer Joel Waterman, who headed the ball across to Quioto. He headed the ball past goalkeeper Matt Turner after getting behind Jones on the play. Quioto scored on a high header, just inside the post. The Revolution had the better scoring opportunities following the intermission; perhaps fatigue was beginning to set in on the Impact? New England easily could have scored two or three goals. Indeed, the visitors appeared to take the lead in the 73rd. The ball, off a free-kick, managed to get through a myriad of defenders to Wilfried Zahibo, who connected from a short distance. However, following a video review, it was deemed the scorer was offside on the play. Zahibo collided with Diop, who remained down, injured on theturf, momentarily.
It was then left to Urruti to play the role of the hero in the 80th, his chip from the top of the box sailing nicely over the head ofTurner.
The Revolution came dangerously close to tying the score in the 87th, but Tajon Buchanan’s header hit the post. The Impact plays its next four MLS games on the road, starting with a match next Saturday, at FC Dallas. hzurkowsky@postmedia.com twitter.com/HerbZurkowsky1RELATED
