The Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York State. The Lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress, under President George Washington, in 1792. Construction began on June 7, 1796, and was completed on November 5, 1796. It still serves as an aidto navigation.

REVETMENT CONSTRUCTION PROJECT Revetment Construction Project. In January, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers announced a $30.7 million contract to protect the Montauk Point Lighthouse from shoreline erosion. The project, awarded to H&L Contracting of Bay Shore, is already underway, and is expected to take approximately two years tocomplete.

The Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York State. The Lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress, under President George Washington, in 1792. Construction began on June 7, 1796, and was completed on November 5, 1796. It still serves as an aidto navigation.

REVETMENT CONSTRUCTION PROJECT Revetment Construction Project. In January, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers announced a $30.7 million contract to protect the Montauk Point Lighthouse from shoreline erosion. The project, awarded to H&L Contracting of Bay Shore, is already underway, and is expected to take approximately two years tocomplete.

Parking. Parking is in the lot across the street from the Lighthouse. There is an $8 fee charged by New York State between 8 am and 4 pm. This does not include admission to the Lighthouse, which is wholly owned by the Montauk Historical Society, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofitorganization.

Constructed of sandstone blocks from Connecticut, 8″ high and varying in length from 18″ to 44″. Foundation is 13′ deep and 9′ thick. The walls are 6′ thick at the base, tapering to 3′ thick at the top. The height of the tower is 110′ 6″. LIGHT THE LIGHTHOUSE LIGHTING. The Montauk Lighthouse is a self-funding not for profit entity, relying solely on our wonderful patrons to support our site, tours and operations. The annual cost of just lighting the Lighthouse for the holiday season is about $50,000. Our first responsibility is to the care and upkeep of “The Light”.
