ISSUES OF CONCERN (VILE BODIES – KIDS) Photographing children can already cause a lot of ISSUES OF CONCERN. When you photograph children you never know how this images might end or how does other people may interpret it. Some children don’t even want to be photographed. There’s loads of issues when photographingchildren e.g.
– the interpretation of the images – some people may take the image in a wrong way and they may see the image in a completely different way than you, – there’s a potential that the images of a child can end taken asa sexual abuse,
– social media – there’s a potential risk that someone you don’t know might use it. FRANCES DUMBLETON is an English photographer photographing kids, weddings, etc. She believes that images of children should say ‘I love you’ (mommy and daddy) and photographs confirm a happy childhood. She believed that if she shot a photograph showing a happy child this one photograph can say everything about child’s childhood. She usually photographed in a studio using loads of props trying to get their attention so the pictures turns out good and children are smiling on them. Children are deep and complex creatures and does contain some pain but some photographers prefer showing children smiling and happy. JOUKO LEHTOLA is a Finnish photographer. He’s known the most for his photographs of teenagers on the open concert and the relationships between them. He called his work ‘YOUNG HEROES’ because he was photographing young teenagers partying in the Finnish summer. His pictures were dazed and confused as sometimes it was hard to see what’s going on on the pictures. On those pictures the ‘kids’ are drunk, bruised, dirty, some of them have been in fights and some of them have found one-night stand. Some of them can be even too young (under age) as one or two picture can’t really tell the age of those people but they still seem innocent. COLLIER SCHORR is an American photographer. She’s photographing mostly adolescence men and women. She often blends photographic realism with youthful fantasy and elements of fiction. Collier Schorr was really inspired by Cindy Sherman’s work and she was trying to shoot her images in Cindy’s style. WENDY EWALD is an American photographer and an educator. She was using her dreams to create a surrealist photography. As an educator she was teaching children how to use a camera and take a good shot. She also wanted them to recreate their dreams using a film camera. She also shot a portrait of a children and after the pictures were printed she gave it to them so they could write and express their emotionsaround the picture.
SALLY MANN is an American photographer best known for her black and white prints especially of her children and her work ‘IMMEDIATE FAMILY‘. She didn’t want to show any of the happy family pictures. She wanted to show the true story of her children’s childhood. Her pictures was normally natural without any posing. She wanted to document her kids life but mostly childhood so she won’t miss anything. On those picture her kids were mostly naked as she believed that they need to have some freedom.Standard

SURREALISM
Surrealism is something that isn’t real it’s mostly abstract, spontaneous and like a dream. Surrealism mostly includes dreams, death, sex, violence and religion. There’s loads of different photographers doing surrealistphotography.
LUIS BUNUEL was a film maker. his film was famous mostly because for his surreal imagery. In his films women had beards etc. Sometimes his films look really scary because of the shots he’s got in the but it’s interesting to watch it. For example this one. We can see ants running around the hand. He was using loads of shots like that in his films. SALVADOR DALI was a Spanish painter. He was best known for his bizarre paintings. His images were really surreal and dream like. The images were really abstract from the reality. ‘The Persistence of Memory’ is the best known work by Dali which includes film, sculpture and photography in collaboration with range of different artists in avariety of media.
This
image is really interesting. It’s a bit different as he was using a variety of media but the way he did this is really interesting and catches your eye. When I look at this image it makes me think how didhe do this.
GUY BOURDIN was a fashion photographer. He was the first photographer to create a complex narrative such as sensual, provocative, shocking, exotic, surrealistic, sometimes sinister assassinated with fashion items. Sometimes a complex narrative were strange. Sometimes they were full of violence, sexuality and surrealism. He did the shots for Madonna’s music video ‘Hollywood’. After the video was released his son recreated his work.Apart from
this video he has done some really good surrealist work including fashion photography in it.His
photographs usually showed a females legs in high heels. His work is really interesting. The way in which he showed fashion photography with surrealism at the same time is really good.Standard

EQUALITY
In 1960’s black Americans didn’t have any rights in the country. Loads of photographers at that time were taking pictures of how black people were treated. BILL HUDSON by taking an image of a dog attacking the black person changed everything. This image was published in New York Times so everyone could see it. Also it is the most popular photograph then. This image shows a 17 years old black demonstraton being attacked by a police dog. This happened in Birmingham in May1963.
During those times there was a lot of protests and conflicts even between the students and the states. A photographer JOHN FILO was taking pictures where the protests and conflicts took place. It was really hard to take a photograph that showed some emotions to not get shot. John Filo had this chance. He shot an image of a screaming women when her friend got shot and killed. This
image shows a lot of emotions. By looking at this women screaming next to her killed friend it makes me sad. During those times the states didn’t really care about people and their rights and decisions. Students didn’t agree with states because it was all about their freedom and the states didn’t like it that’s why states where fighting with the students. Another photographer who took an really good image during the war was LARRY BURROWS. He took an image of an injured white guy and black man giving him a hand to help him get up.This
image shows black person wanted to help a white guy after he got injured. Around him we can see a white people stopping him. It was because white people didn’t accept black people those days. Even know he was trying to help him. This picture brings a lot of emotions. It makes you think why it was happening and why black people didn’t have any rights in thecountry.

WAR
In today’s lesson we were picturing war and the role of the war photographer. We had to think is the photographs were true and honest. FRANK HURLEY in 1917 joined the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and took many beautiful photographs (scenes) during war. Few of his images was a monatge as he couldn’t take some images as it was too dangerous for him. If he did come out of the trench he could be shot to death. That’s why he had to compose some of the images he took. This is one of the image he composed. He took an image of the soldiers running out of their trenches and separate image of the airplanes flying and shooting people and then he put those two image as one. ROBERT CAPA is best known for his photograph of failing soldier. he have shot this image just in time when the soldier got shot and was failing to the ground.ROBERT
CAPA documented fife different wars by his photographs – SPANISH CIVIL WAR, SECOND SINO-JAPANESE WAR, WORLD WAR II, 1948 ARAB-ISRAELI WAR and FIRST INDOCHINA WAR.He
was working as a partner with Gerda Taro through Spanish Civil War. She got shot at age 27. LARRY BURROWS was involved in VIETNAM WAR. He was a photojournalist and best known for his photographs in Vietnam War. He was trying to document everything that was happening then in war.He
documented everything. Even what the soldiers felt when they’ve lostone of them.
DON MCCULLIN he’s a British photojournalist best known for his war photography. He said “I could have gone on photographing wars all my life, but what kind of person would it have made me?”. He said this because in some point it was traumatic watching people die all thetime.
JAMES NACHTWEY an American photojournalist and photographer. From 1981, after his first assignment which was to cover civil strife in Northern Ireland during the IRA hunger strike he begin his career as a magazine photographer. During the war he was photographing to collectevidence.
LUC DELAHAYE is a French photographer. His pictures are documentary contered by dramatic intesity and narrative structure. He wanted to show the event at the moment it happened and tell it like it is. EDDIE ADAMS was an American photographer and photojournalist that covered 13 wars. He won a Pulitzer Price in 1969. The winning photography was a caption of ‘General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing a Vietcong prisoner in Saigon’. PHILIP JONES GRIFFITHS was a Welsh photojournalist who covered the Vietnam War. His photographs were difficult to watch as he concentrated on on the suffering people in Vietnam and he reflectedhis views on war.
Later on we were sent to shoot three images in a style of those photographers. We took one image in a style of Eddie Adams and then we were just improvising. We couldn’t really get a proper image because girls were laughing.POST NAVIGATION
