After long discussions on the matter, it was decided to conserve Grauballe Man intact and in his entirety. This posed a big challenge to conservator G. Lange-Korbak, as nothing like this had ever been attempted and there were no methods available yet for the conservation of large waterlogged items of skin, hair, bone and soft tissue.

Many of the investigations focused on Grauballe Man´s life and health, but forensic investigations also provided further insight into

his death.

These lifelike sculptures are anatomically correct reconstructions of our ancestors, and they are created in accordance with the most recent bone findings from all around the World.

Macabre or not, the news about Grauballe Man’s discovery spread very fast and many people queued up to see him when he was temporarily displayed at the Prehistoric Museum in Aarhus. Just like today, people were “gripped with wonderment and veneration for this unusual glimpse from a distant past” as one newspaper reporter wrote.

Such finds were made by peat cutters on a regular basis. In the Netherlands for instance, bog finds are first mentioned as early as 1658 AD. An 18 th c. AD account describes the ‘leather jerkins, rough hats, shoes, potshorns of oxen and deer, teeth of animals and other things one finds below the bogs’. Many of these early finds

It severed the major arteries, leading to immediate unconsciousness. A few minutes later Grauballe man died as a result of the loss of blood. Unlike the broken skull and leg, there is no mistaking this wound for an accident - Grauballe Man was clearly executed. Grauballe

The artificial bog. Thus, an artificial bog was created in a large box filled with oak bark and water. Grauballe Man’s body was stuffed with oak bark and wrapped in oil cloth before being lowered into the box, which was packed with oak bark and filled with water. Grauballe Man lay in this tanning bath for a total of 18 months.
