GEIGER COUNTER
Introducing the MightyOhm Geiger Counter kit! Detect beta and gamma radiation with your own portable Geiger counter! This kit includes all components needed to build a completely open source, hackable, working Geiger counter. Most versions of the kit include a Geiger-Muller tube, but a barebones kit is also available without one (more info down TUTORIAL: GEIGER COUNTER DATA LOGGING So, you want to log data with your Geiger Counter kit?. Here’s how to do it! You will need: A MightyOhm Geiger Counter Kit – available on this site or from one of my distributors.; A USB-Serial cable; I recommend the FTDI TTL-232R-3V3, available from many electronics suppliers, such as Adafruit Industries. The cable must operate with a TTL logic level ‘high’ voltage around 3V. TIPS FOR FINDING TEST EQUIPMENT SERVICE MANUALS The wiki now includes a list of reputable service manual vendors. The only vendor I have used is Artek Media. They have very reasonable prices and great support. At $5-$10 a pop, sometimes it’s easier to just buy the manual than scour the web for hours, so it’s nice to be able to trade laziness for dollars. It also fluoresces brilliantly under UV light! Uranium glass is commonly found in depression-era glassware, the glass-to-metal seals in some old vacuum tubes, and most commonly in the form of green glass marbles on eBay. The HV Rescue Shield 2 is a high voltage parallel mode fuse programmer for Atmel AVR microcontrollers. It currently supports a wide variety of AVR chips, including the 28-pin ATmega48/88/168/328 series, the 20-pin ATtiny2313, and many 8-pin ATtiny devices (such as the ATtiny25/45/85 and ATtiny13A). A SPOTTER’S GUIDE TO THE SBM-20 GEIGER COUNTER TUBE click to enlarge. The picture above shows a variety of Geiger tubes that are commonly sold under the name “SBM-20”. This post is an attempt to clear up some of the confusion around these tubes and to share some information about the different tube styles I have encountered in the wild since I first started selling Geiger Counter kits in 2011.. This is my spotter’s guide to the SBM-20 SOLDERING IS EASY: HERE'S HOW TO DO IT (EXTENDED VERSION) Touch the cleaned tip to both the pad and the lead of the part you want to solder. Keep it there for about 1 second, so everything heats up nicely. Then add about 1mm to 3mm of solder under the tip. Don’t add it above the tip, since that melts the solder ARDUINO-BASED AVR HIGH VOLTAGE PROGRAMMER Update 01/02/09: A PCB version of this circuit is in the design stages – some preliminary information is here. Jeff 5 Comments
The 39th annual Mike and Key ARC Swap Meet will take place on Saturday, March 7th, 2020 at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup. This is one of my favorite ham radio events in the Seattle area and I’ll be there again this year, hopefully with a seller’s table (still waiting on confirmation). mikeandkeyarc seattleSwapmeet

RESCUE SHIELD KITS (PCBS + COMPONENTS) ARE BACK IN STOCK!January 14, 2020
Jeff Leave a comment I sold out of Rescue Shield kits just after the holidays. Fortunately, new PCBs and components arrived last week. Hooray for no back-ordered components this time! What used to be the norm is now the exception. (Technically, green LEDs did ship a week later than the rest, but as I was still busy soldering boards it didn’t affect the overall lead time to produce kits.) I’m happy to announce that kits are back in stock now. You can order one on the Rescue Shield kit page.

Episode 472(!) of The Amp Hour (Keyzermas Vacation)just went live.
In it, we discuss wireless charging, Solidworks vs. Fusion 360, why it’s a good idea to have ALL the tools available and not just pick one, and the importance of having more than the minimum number ofpieces of flair.
Happy Holidays from MightyOhm! PS: Kits are in stock but will resume shipping after the holidays! keyzermas theamphourKits
KYLE’S LORAWAN-ENABLED GEIGER COUNTEROctober 1, 2019
Jeff Leave a comment Kyle Gabriel created this LoRaWAN bridge for the MightyOhm Geiger Counter kit . He’s using a Moteino Mega with a LoRaWAN transceiver and a color OLED display toshow status.
You can see more details on the GitHub page for his project.
