THE HISTORY OF THE PIANO The Golden Age. Generally speaking, historians and technicians refer to the time between post WWI and the Great Depression as the “Golden Age” of piano building, because by and large, many people had come to the conclusion that the design and general conception of the instrument was ‘complete’, and that there was very little room for further improvements. THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO MUSIC KEY SIGNATURES A key signature is a symbol at the beginning of a song that tells us which piano notes will be sharp or flat for the rest of the song, but even more than that, it tells us what scale the song got its notes from. With the above example, we can see that every B, E and A in the song will be flat. The scale that has 3 flats (B♭, E♭ and A♭) isSkip to content

01. CURRICULUM
When people think of piano lessons, many picture a disciplinarian teacher standing overhead, holding a ruler…ready to strike at the first possible mistake. While we’ve (thankfully) moved passed such torture for piano students, surprisingly the content of those very lessons still lingers within the piano education community. One of Merriam Music’s biggest and most obvious differences is that we focus on so much _more _than just RIGHT NOTES OR EXAM SCORES. We teach music in a ‘linguistic’ sense, meaning that we teach the grammar, vocabulary, and repertoire of the musical language. Then we combine an unmatched number of performance and ensemble music making opportunities so that those skills get used in a relevant, engagingway.
02. PERFORMANCE
The point of learning an advanced skill – and music is certainly that – is to USE IT! Ask yourself this question: “If you were learning a sport such as soccer, but the only time you played was with your coach for 30 minutes a week, and there was no team-mates, no crowd, and no stadium, how long would you do it?” The answer for most people of course is NOT VERY LONG. And we have found the same thing with music. Music is naturally a social activity, but if it is never experienced like this, many people find it hard to find meaning and relevance. After all, you can only get so excitedabout an exam!
03. FACILITIES
We can all recall how if feels to step inside an extraordinary facility – the first time in a recording studio, or maybe walking into a new stadium, a new car, or an amusement park. Its that feeling of awe and wonderment that we all get when we can step outside of our everyday lives and feel the excitement of something special. Here at Merriam School of Music, we have dedicated an enormous amount of creativity, finances, and time into creating what many have called the most unique musical learning facilities in Canada. Studio A/B (Oakville) our jam/coaching rooms (Vaughan/Oakville), enriched studios (Oakville), enhanced group rooms (Vaughan/Oakville), and our enhanced private rooms (Vaughan) or standard private rooms (Oakville) constitute an absolute commitment to provide our students the verybest surroundings.

My daughter has been taking group piano classes at Merriam for 4 years, and loves it. The group setting creates a sense of camaraderie among the kids. Her teacher since she started the program, Hadley, is encouraging and a friend as well as a teacher. The school is a home away from home, somewhere we also go for summer and March Break camps. It's not cheap, but comparable to private lessons and a better option for kids who want to learn but not make music the all-consuming center of their lives. We highly recommend MSM (Merriam School of Music) for beginners to learn a solid foundation of music theory and instrumentskills.read more

Jessica is an incredible teacher very professional and keep the kids engaged in every aspect. Her teaching is very clear and she's very patient to make sure that her kids understood the lesson. This is my daughter’s first musical school and it has been great experience! Well organized and admin support, a lot of performance opportunities for kid to show case on the stage. Group class makes it possible for the parents to learn what the kids have learnt so easier to guide them practice as home. But yes parents need to spend time on it. Special thanks to Ms. Jessica, my daughter’s first piano teacher, she is professional, dedicated, patient and very good at working with kids. During the pandemic lock down, the school offered an online platform option so we don’t have to stop the learning. Ms. Jessica communicated with parents very promptly in email with class details to ensure a smooth transition. Thanks!read moreGina Macancela

Our daughter has been attending Merriam School of Music group piano program for 6 years now since she was 5 and it has been a very positive experience. The program offers a good mix of practice and theory provided in a playful and interactive manner appropriate for children of all ages. We also liked that there are many opportunities to perform in recitals and festivals. Even during current lockdown they have done an exceptional job of moving classes online very quickly and effectively with good interactive technology that works well considering the limitations. My 6 year-old daughter started group piano lessons at Merriam last September. The progress she has made has far exceeded our expectations and as she continues to be challenged, her love of music grows. This is something that she will enjoy forever. Merriam offers tons of opportunities such as recitals, competitions, studio fest for young music lovers to showcase their achievements. The school creates a great environment for aspiring musicians. I'm so happy to see that under the COVID-19 school building closure, Merriam has been keeping delivering high quality lessons through its virtual platform. Merriam has so many good music teachers. Worth every penny. Fast forward a year later with Andrea Leung as her teacher and we are absolutely thrilled. Our seven year old daughter has learned so much in only one year. Andrea is patient, enthusiastic, supportive and a wonderful teacher. Lessons are appropriate and engaging. My son has been in Ms. Jessica's group piano class and is super motivated and encouraged. Ms. Jessica is a wonderful teacher. It's very impressive that she knows every single student so well, such as what their strengths are, what they are capable of, where they need to improve, and how they can be engaged to move forward together as a group. She keeps the class very fun and she pays attention to everyone. When they start to learn a new piece or new skill, she will walk around in the classroom to make sure everyone gets it. She is very patient and positive. It's easy for students to stay focused and it seems the one hour just passes by so quick. My son enjoyed the class very much. Our granddaughter, Isabella, is now in Intermediate 2 Piano, which means that she has been taking lessons at Merriam for almost six years - hard to believe the time has passed so quickly. Her teachers have been Ms. Alex, Miss Grace, Miss Michele and, for the past two years, Miss Hadley. Each has been perfectly appropriate for her age at the time, and now that she is eleven, Ms. Hadley reminds the class that each one is individually responsible for keeping up with the others. If I was to offer any advice to parents just starting out, I would say start early in the process to make practice a daily part of the routine. We do it every day (except Friday - everyone needs one day off) as soon as she comes home from school, just before supper. That way there are no surprises, and, while there are occasional moans and groans, it is an expected and normal part of the day. And, as the years pass, the curriculum is so varied that there will be at least one piece that your student will find interesting and enjoyable. I would recommend Merriam for any parent who is thinking about music lessons for their child (or grandchild) - and for yourself aswell.read more

My two boys, 7 and 10 yrs old have been coming to Merriam for group piano for 3 years. I have absolutely loved the program. There is a significant parental commitment, for me it’s two hours in the class a week along with daily practicing. If I did not think that this program delivered we definitely would not still be here! Specifically we have enjoyed the rich content and abundant opportunities for live performances. In class educational games and seasonal parties have really given my boys a positive impression/ experience with piano. Andrea has been their piano teacher. My daughter started her piano lessons in the Keyfest group program and loved it. It was a fun and interactive way to introduce piano and educate the kids while keeping them engaged and interested. My daughter really excelled in the class and was very keen to continue her piano studies with Merriam. As she progressed, we switched to private lessons at which she is enjoying just as much. But the major factor in her success is her teacher Ms.Carlie. Ms. Carlie is one of the best teachers at Merriam. We have been with Merriam for the last 12 years with three children. Over the years, we’ve experienced group piano lessons, private piano and vocal lessons, Enriched piano and vocal classes. What we like best are : (1) the teachers are all wonderful – talented in their fields but most importantly, had great connections with the students; (2) the group piano classes are very effective, especially in terms of learning music theory; (3) having adults sit in through the group classes allow parents to be involved in the learning journey, (4) the recitals and performance opportunities allow students to improve on their stage presence more confidently and (5) the curriculum is not restricted to classical training, but rather encourages kids to improvise and allow them to freely express themselves.read moreLindsay Stocks

We started with the program 3 years ago. We were not sure how the group class would work at the beginning. But shortly after we started we saw that it was working great! The Keyfest program is a very well designed program that teaches how to be a musician not only how to play the songs. If kids go on with this program, they will be enjoying music all their lives because they will know the music theory which will help them to play together with other people and share.Teachers are not only high skilled musicians but also they know how to manage a group class and work with kids. An update from my 2017 review: My positive experience with Merriam School of Music continues. My youngest is in her 3rd year and loves her class and her teacher, Miss Hadley. Miss Hadley has endless enthusiasm (even with our late afternoon session) and always keeps the students engaged and interested. She is a wonderful instructor, no question. I hope the schedules do not change too much; we prefer to remain with Miss Hadley over the coming years. My eldest has been with Miss Vanessa for eight years (and counting) and hearing her play is, literally, music to my ears. Miss Vanessa has also been an amazing teacher .... from group lessons to private. Her enthusiasm is also endless and we are so happy to have had her as a teacher for so many years.Bottom Line: The teachers make the difference, between a good and not-so-good school. And it is these teachers—Miss Hadley and Miss Vanessa (and, earlier, Miss Andrea)—that keep us at Merriam.Side note: I hope management plans to expand the physical facilities to accommodate the growing number of students over the past year.*****(Review from 2017) In my view, the group lessons offered by Merriam is the best way to learn piano at a young age. Both of my children are with Merriam: the oldest has been with the same amazing teacher, Miss Vanessa, for nearly a decade, and the youngest is in her 2nd year with Miss Andrea and Miss Hadley, both of whom are awesome teachers. I believe that the curriculum is critical, but the teachers and their teaching methods (for theory and practical) are equally critical as they are on the front line and need to keep young children interested. All in, Merriam is a fabulous school! For anyone thinking about enrolling for music lessons---whether it be piano, drums, guitar, vocal---Merriam is the place to be.read moreAngela Kretz

Ms. Hadley has been teaching our son for almost 3 years. We have witnessed our son grow and learn a lot from Ms. Hadley's instruction - he truly enjoys piano, looks forward to classes and likes to practice! Ms. Hadley is a fun, patient instructor who really can speak to children in a language that relates to them, but helps share the insights of music in an fun, dynamic way. As a parent, I see how Ms. Hadley can break down the elements of music/theory and present them in a fun way, like games such as bingo or snakes & ladders. This is a brilliant teaching method for children as they are learning music, while enjoying the process.I have referred many of our friends to Merriam Music (Oakville) and often say "you must request Ms. Hadley". Merriam's curriculum is focused on age-appropriate development yet helps them each individually achieve confidence both in music, but also in public speaking as we witness many of their recitals. As a family we are delighted with the instruction and curriculum and look forward to continuing this experience, both with our son and soon, with our daughter.Thank you Merriam Music (Oakville) and Ms. Hadley for making music/piano FUN!read moreSam Ballucci

Wonderful staff - helpful, professional, knowledgeable and music savvy.Piano teachers are top notch. In my 3 years of piano lessons I had 3 piano teachers and I really liked their training techniques which helped me become a good piano player. Of particular mention is Dragica Radjonic, who is my present teacher. During the last 3 years, Dragica has been my mentor, teaching me and guiding me using her comfortable and effective approach. Besides her friendly personality, she has proved to possess the right stuff to be a great piano teacher. I'm sure I am not the only who can attest to that conclusion. Thanks Dragica and all the staff specially all the other piano teachers..........Sam B.read moreMaxine Moses
