Mental health is not just the absence of mental illness or the symptoms of mental illness. The actions we take to address symptoms doesn’t necessarily improve wellbeing – this is where this comes in. People with depression may also experience anxiety disorders, addiction issues and may engage in deliberate self-harm. The most recent year for which we have provisional suicide data is the financial year from July 2018 – June 2019. This data showed the highest number of reported suicides New Zealand has recorded. 685 people are suspected to have died by suicide during this period. ACCESSING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES To find low cost or free counselling in your area, search the Family Services Directory, or contact your local CAB.; Your GP can link you in with low cost services near you. Your GP can support you to access the WINZ Disability Allowance to pay for some counselling sessions.; If you are in paid employment you may be able to access free confidential counselling through your company’s EmployeeWHAT IS WELLBEING
Sometimes focusing on mental health and wellbeing can feel too small and simple – especially when you’re going through a tough time. It can feel like advice to connect with others or go for a walk belittles what you’re going through. OPEN MINDS E-LEARNING Mental distress or illness doesn’t discriminate and can happen to all sorts of people, for all sorts of reasons, at almost any time. For workplaces and people managers, it’s important to be inclusive and supportive of people experiencing mental distress, but it’s not always easy to know how to get started. PERSONALITY DISORDERS Borderline personality disorder is a pattern of having very unstable relationships, self-image and feelings, and behaving recklessly. Narcissistic personality disorder is a pattern of feeling very self-important, needing admiration from others, and having little feeling for others.
