Abi R's story. October 2021 will mark 20 years since Abi contracted meningococcal septicaemia, leaving her with an acquired brain injury and painful mobility. Her mission now is to normalise mobility aids and inspire others to be proud of theirs too. SIGHT PROBLEMS FOLLOWING MENINGITIS Meningitis can cause sight problems, an after-effect which may be permanent or temporary. The disease can damage the nerve responsible for sight (the optic nerve), resulting in partial loss of vision, or blindness in one of both eyes. ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY AFTER-EFFECT Both meningitis and septicaemia can cause an acquired brain injury, this is brain damage that has occurred at any time after birth. This after-effect may take months or even years to develop and can be subtle, although severe acquired brain injury will be obvious quickly. Affected? We can help you. RARE TYPES OF MENINGITIS Meningitis is most commonly caused by bacteria and viruses. Within these more common bacteria, are other bacteria that cause rarer types of meningitis. REGAINING SEEMA'S INDEPENDENCE Seema, from Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, contracted meningococcal septicaemia on 5 July 2015, a few months before her 60th birthday.. The disease led to bilateral amputations below both knees and partial digit amputations on all fingers. THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS Our volunteers gave over 4,000 hours of their time to support aspects of our work in 2019-20, including raising essential awareness, supporting our student and young people’s campaign, helping out at major events such as the London Marathon (this was the pre-covid year) and delivering elements of our Believe & Achieve programme for young people.. MENINGITIS VACCINATIONS IN LIVERPOOL Five years after losing daughter Alisha to the disease while she was studying in Liverpool, Michaela Bartolini is supporting a pilot project we’re running to raise the numbers getting the MenACWY vaccination in the city and surrounding areas..
