MEMSAABSTORY
The film stars a very young Amitabh Bachchan, Yogita Bali, Navin Nischol and Shatrughan Sinha, and is directed by Jyoti Swaroop, who directed two of my favorite films ( Padosan and Chorni ). It was billed as a thriller of sorts, although there is no effort made to disguise “whodunit”—it’s marginally more of a “howdunit”. FILMI INDEX (ALPHABETICAL) Hi, There is a classic wonderful movie, `Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi’ *ing Meena Kumari, Raj Kumar, Nadira and Sarika in principal roles. The songs are excellent, the acting is great and Meena Kumari plays anurse in the movie.
FILMI INDEX (CHRONOLOGICAL) 1930’s and earlier Kaliya Mardan (1919) The Light of Asia (Prem Sanyas) 1925 Shiraz (1929) A Throw of Dice (Prapancha Pash) (1929) Ayodhyecha Raja (1932) (Marathi) Karma (1933) Achhut Kanya (ROOPESH KUMAR
Regular readers here know that by and large I adore Manmohan Desai and his films and can mostly forgive him for anything except Ganga Jamuna Saraswati. It has long been my great sorrow that two of his movies, Shararat and this one, are not available with subtitles. Manmohan Desai’s complicated plotting has always seemed daunting without them and though I have had both films for a long time I MY TEN FAVORITE FILM QAWWALIS Like most westerners discovering Hindi films and music, I fell in love quickly with the wonderful song form known as “qawwali.” People have many different interpretations on what a true qawwali is; I am just going to list my favorite film qawwalis, which I know have taken some liberties with the pure form. I like this particular article about qawwali and its history and development.PARWANA (1971)
Parwana (1971) The tagline on the DVD cover caught my eye first: “A Murder Plan That Forced Indian Railways To Change Their Train Timing!”. I am not sure that Indian Railways actually did worry that much about murders galore being unleashed on the Indian public, but it was enough to attract me. The film stars a very young Amitabh BachchanLALKAR (1972)
It’s nice to see you back and that too in full form. Lalkar is a lacklustre movie and can be seen purely for formulaic entertainment. I don’t know whether you have seen and reviewed Aankhen (1968) which is a genuine spy movie and manifold impressive than Lalkar. MY TEN FAVORITE HELEN SONGS 6. “Hello Everybody” from Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati (1969), music by Kalyanji Anandji. Ostrich feathers gracing her head, Helen dances around the club in a transparent nightie with four nattily dressed backup dancers in this happy, bubbly number, spreading joy. Dailymotion Video Player - Hello Everybody.AAMNE SAAMNE (1967)
A woman’s scream rings out and the servants spring into action, catching a man on the grounds. As the credits roll, he is put on trial. His name is Deepak Verma (Shashi Kapoor), and the unhappy murder victim is Vimla, his wife. The judge acquits him for lack of evidence but as is so often the case in real life too, the public—and Vimla’s AAJ KI TAAZA KHABAR (1973) Sanjit Narwekar. March 3, 2011 at 2:44 am. Radha (real name: Rita) Saluja played the lead in Sazaye Maut, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film is a remake (or actually an extension) of his FTII diploma film Murder on Monkey Hill. Both films were edited by Radha’s sister Renu (later to become Vidhu’s first wife).MEMSAABSTORY

This Sharmila Tagore home production took years to make and it shows, mostly in Rajesh Khanna’s hair. But it’s sort of fitting, actually, because the story itself takes place over years—as do all of the Sharmila-Rajesh movies, with lots and lots of suffering and noble sacrificing principles (tyaag!) along the way. This is full of all that, but still I enjoyed it: sometimes angst is notTRIVIA TIME
Trivia time #37. Ramanand Sagar made many “Jubilee” hits in the 1960s, including Geet, Aarzoo, Aankhen and Kohinoor. He also made a television series out of the Ramayana, which became such a smashing success that the streets were empty when it aired.PARWANA (1971)

Okay yes! I’m cheating a bit. I’ve covered “Abhi To Haath Mein” before in my favorite Dharmendra songs post so it doesn’t really count (but it deserves aAMAR (1954)
Amar was the most favorite movie of Mehboob Khan. This movie was way above the standard of even today. The acting of Dilip Kumar was ultimate. His acting method with eyes and controlled body was just majestical. The songs of Naushad cannot be compared. The direction of Mehboob was too much for ordinary people.PROFESSOR (1962)
I looooove this movie. Anyhow, Shammi is really cute here. Wish he’d ended up with Lalita Pawar, though! I remember a much later movie (the Sanjeev Kumar starrer Ladies Tailor I think) with a similar conflict where they solved the problem by bringing in a look-alike exactly the same age as the pretend old guy and the “old” lady gets her happily-ever-after too. EXCELLENT USE OF HELEN Director Mohammed Hussain has long been one of my more prolific and dependable favorites, having delivered the crazy likes of Faulad , Shikari , Main Hoon Aladdin , CID 909 , Teesra Kaun, and on and on). For the cast he has roped in his usual stalwarts, including Helen as heroine and perpetually belligerent Shyam Kumar in a Prince Valiantwig.
PRITHVI VALLABH (1943) Prithvi Vallabh (1943) Well, this is the earliest Hindi film yet that I’ve seen. It’s the third in a trilogy of spectacularly mounted historicals made by Sohrab Modi: Pukar (1939), Sikander (1941, which made Prithviraj Kapoor a film star) and then this. Since it doesn’t have subtitles, I did some research so I’d have some clue as toMEMSAABSTORY

Aakhri Khat is the tale of toddler on the streets of Dehli as he goes on a searching quest for his mother who passed away. Of course verifying its accuracy is impossible, but I think it is an RANJEET: THE HOT VILLAIN Accessorized with a black scarf! Not just anybody could pull that off as a bad guy outfit, but Ranjeet does. Sharmilee was an early film, and he played a ladies’ man with a thing for Rakhee’s “bad” twin. AAKHRI KHAT (1966)
Aakhri Khat is the tale of toddler on the streets of Dehli as he goes on a searching quest for his mother who passed away. The child oblivious to the fact that his mother is no more retraces his steps to the last place where he saw her thinking his mother is playing an elaborate game of hide & seek. Since it doesn’t have subtitles, I did some research so I’d have some clue as toPRAKASH KAUR DEOL
Dharmendra’s wife Prakash, whom he married in 1954 at the age of 19 and with whom he has four children, Ajay (Sunny), Bobby, and two daughters, has mostly shunned the spotlight; but a persistent Stardust reporter cornered her in her home in 1981 and this was the result. Talk about being off and running as an eve-teaser and aMEMSAABSTORY

PARWANA (1971)
The tagline on the DVD cover caught my eye first: “A Murder Plan That Forced Indian Railways To Change Their Train Timing!” I am not sure that Indian Railways actually did worry that much about murders galore being unleashed on the Indian public, but it was enough to attract me. The film stars a very young Amitabh Bachchan, Yogita Bali, Navin Nischol and Shatrughan Sinha, and is directed by Jyoti Swaroop, who directed two of my favorite films (_Padosan_ and _Chorni_). It was billed as a thriller of sorts, although there is no effort made to disguise “whodunit”—it’s marginally more of a“howdunit”.
It is a very stylish and nicely-paced production, however, and showcases the soon-to-be overwhelming charisma of its anti-hero Bachchan to great effect (especially compared to milquetoast-y “hero” Navin Nischol). Continue reading → Posted in Hindi movies| 37 Comments »

APRIL FOOL (1964)
Lord I love Indian spy films from the 1960s, but make no mistake about it: this is a bad movie. Since I expected that going in, I was not disappointed, and in fact was delighted to find a decent level of (possibly inadvertent) hilarity. I will share those gems here so that you can give the painfully awkward and sparkless Biswajeet/Saira Banu pairing, the boring songs, and the disaster that is the plot(s), amiss.

ROOP TERA MASTANA (1972) (MINI-REVIEW) I quickly grew tired of the plot (Pran evil, Mumtaz helpless, Jeetendra clueless, I.S. Johar painful), but remained riveted to Mumtaz’s Disney princess wardrobe and accessories. Continue reading → Posted in Hindi movies| 23 Comments »

THE OLD COWHAND…
This week, two days before he would have turned 14, I said goodbye to one of the most entertaining and endearing characters to ever cross my path. Bandit came to me just over three years ago, right before his 11th birthday. His rescuer and foster dad, Eric, posted the following on my Facebook page the next day, and I think his words and pictures describe Bandit’s backstory (as he calls them, Acts I and II) so eloquently and beautifully that with his permission I am sharing them with you. PREM KAHANI (1937)
I love the elegance of the Art Deco era of the Twenties and Thirties. Of course my mother points out that I would have probably been at the back of a bread line dressed in rags, but I prefer to picture myself draped in chiffon and pearls, languidly smoking from a long cigarette holder and lounging in a posh Park Avenue mansion. Thanks to _Prem Kahani_, that vision has been altered slightly to one of gold-edged sarees and cocktail shakers; a quartet of musicians playing in my Marine Drive home as friends and I rehearse for a benefit we’re holding for the poor and needy (the people actually standing in that bread line of Mom’s). But I am getting ahead of myself. Continue reading → Posted in Hindi film history,

LALKAR (1972)
The film’s title is actually Lalkar (The Challenge) but I never did figure out what the Challenge was, other than getting through the Comic Side Plot interruptions and tepid romantic interludes which kept intruding on the otherwise fun espionage plot. Rajendra Kumar and Mala Sinha get top billing, so I was hoping to collect some Nahiiin Face additions for the Gallery but they were fairly restrained. They are supported by a stellar cast of character actors led by the inestimable Shyam Kumar as the eye-patch wearing Japanese villain, Dharmendra at his peak, saucy Kum Kum, some really special special effects, and a host of small details that made it eminentlywatchable.

ALIBABA (1977)
Even with subtitles, I probably would have fast-forwarded through vast stretches of this film; without them I spent much of my time bewildered by the plot and bored by its meandering. I might not have bothered to write it up either except for there’s an absolute dearth of material about it out there, and it does have some _very_ redeeming qualities. It seems to have had a decent budget: there are a lot of well-known character and comic actors; the costumes and sets are lush and colorful; Helen and Laxmi Chhaya each have dances. I suspect though I can’t confirm that none of the money lavished on it went to a script writer, however. Mohammed Hussain is a director whose name I am always happy to see in the credits, but he might have been rather worn out or bored himself by the time this was made. It lacks his trademark lunacy, and that craziness is sorely missed. _Khair_. Enough quibbling, let’s talk about the good stuff. Continue reading → Posted in Hindi movies| 13 Comments »

GUEST POST: INDURANI, A STAR OF THE 1930S This article is written by my friend and film historian Arunkumar Deshmukh, who previously has shared here his knowledge on actors Parshuram and Bhudo Advani. I am very honored that he asked me to publish this here, and I am thrilled to find out more about the beautiful actress Indurani of 1930s and 40s fame, her family (including her sister, actress Sarojini, and niece Azra—always a favorite of mine ), her career and her life. I know you will be too! Continue reading → Posted in Hindi film history,

(I AM NOT OUT OF MY MIND, I AM A) RAJPUT (1982) So proclaims Bhanu Singh (Vinod Khanna) _in English_ at about two hours into this epic, leading me to reflect that if I’ve learned nothing else from Hindi movies, I do know that an unhinged mind and a Rajput heritage are not as mutually exclusive as he thinks. Still, this is possibly my favorite line ever spoken in the history of movies, with the bonus of an unnecessary but hilarious subtitle: “I am not insane, I am a Rajput!” Actually, the subtitles are one of my favorite things about this movie, and there are a lot of favorite things. AURAT (1967)
As many of you know, I tend to avoid films with titles like “Woman” or “Daughter-in-Law” or “Sister” or “Bride” like the plague they generally are. But after my dear friend and devoted Rajesh fan Suhan sent me a link to one of the songs from this, I investigated further and discovered that, besides a very young Rajesh, the cast included a very young Feroz Khan, the lovely Nazima, PRAN! and a host of other stalwarts (Padmini, Lalita Pawar, Leela Chitnis, Mohan Chhoti, OP Ralhan, Baby Rani—OH Baby Rani. How I love/hate you). I figured with these people and the lovely music by Ravi maybe I could survive the Red Mist that I would likely be afflicted with, and I am so glad I took the chance. I found it unexpectedly sweet and funny, and if the story went a bit overboard in places…well, such is life. Plus, no Red Mist at all! Or hardly at all. While it is certainly true that Padmini sacrifices early and often, her actions make sense and she is no weepinghelpless pushover.
