Hey y’all, while I’ve got all kinds of information on how to sew knit fabric, while developing my latest pattern, the Bexley Dress, I realized there are some tips specific to rayon knit or what I call “slinky knits” that might be helpful.SEW PAJAMA SHORTS
Fold the top edge of the shorts 1/4″ to the wrong side and press. Then fold down again, 1 1/8″ to the wrong side and press again to form a casing for the elastic. If you want to add a tag to the back of the shorts, stitch it on now. Next, sew the casing close to the bottom folded edge, leaving an opening to insert the elastic. HOW TO FIT PANTS WHEN SEWING When making a muslin you can tie elastic around your waist to hold the pants up – this makes the muslin a very quick sew. A well fitting pair of pants has both enough room to go around the hips and enough room to go between the legs. If either of these proportions goes off, fit issues happen. For the purposes of this post we’re going to POST SURGERY CAMISOLE The suggested price is $5, because that amount covers the cost of materials for one donated camisole. Draw another line parallel to center front, from the apex down to the bottom edge. These are the lines shown in the left graphic above. MENS SHORTS TUTORIAL WITH POCKETS Place the shorts front right sides together with the shorts back and sew the side seams as shown below, making sure to keep the bottom edges of the pockets in line where they overlap the shorts front. You’ll be sewing through 3 layers there, so make sure to pin well. Open up the shorts and sew the inseam as shown above. ALTERING A JEAN JACKET I marked out a line over the pins, then added a seam allowance beyond the line. I cut off the fabric beyond the seam allowances on each side as shown above. Then I re- flat felled the side seams. This does mean that I lost most of the fading on the seams, but hopefully that will come back soon. Hey y’all, while I’ve got all kinds of information on how to sew knit fabric, while developing my latest pattern, the Bexley Dress, I realized there are some tips specific to rayon knit or what I call “slinky knits” that might be helpful. HOW TO FIT PANTS WHEN SEWING When making a muslin you can tie elastic around your waist to hold the pants up – this makes the muslin a very quick sew. A well fitting pair of pants has both enough room to go around the hips and enough room to go between the legs. If either of these proportions goes off, fit issues happen. For the purposes of this post we’re going to HOW TO SEW THREAD CHAIN BUTTON LOOPS Close the loop. Drop the first stitch loop and continue to pull the loop on your middle finger until the first stitch is a knot. Repeat steps 3-5 until the chain is as long as you need it to be. Knot the chain. HOW TO SEW A LINED BODICE Clip the curves and any Vs in the neckline, then turn the bodice right sides out and press the neckline. Next is the “burrito” part of sewing a lined bodice. MENS SHORTS TUTORIAL WITH POCKETS Place the shorts front right sides together with the shorts back and sew the side seams as shown below, making sure to keep the bottom edges of the pockets in line where they overlap the shorts front. You’ll be sewing through 3 layers there, so make sure to pin well. Open up the shorts and sew the inseam as shown above. ALTERING A JEAN JACKET I marked out a line over the pins, then added a seam allowance beyond the line. I cut off the fabric beyond the seam allowances on each side as shown above. Then I re- flat felled the side seams. This does mean that I lost most of the fading on the seams, but hopefully that will come back soon. Add the lining into the hat, wrong sides together. To finish the inside, add ribbon. 1 1/2″ or wider grosgrain or satin ribbon cut to the head circumference plus 1/2″ and seam allowance works best. Take the needle and thread through the last loop and then pull TYPES OF ELASTIC AND WHEN TO USE THEM Knitted Elastic. Knitted elastic is made by knitting the fibers together. Knitted elastic tends to be softer than braided or woven elastic, and it retains its width when stretched. It also works well even when pierced by needles, so it’s a good choice for sew on applications. It rolls more than woven elastic, but less than braidedelastic.
HOW TO MAKE A SCRUNCHIE Turn right side out through seam gap. Insert elastic. Stitch seam gap closed. Time needed: 10 minutes. How to sew a scrunchie. Fold fabric in half and sew the long edge, leaving a gap in the seam. Match the long edges, and make sure your gap is 1 inch or so and closer to one end. Turn tube halfway to the right side, match short raw ends. MOST EXPENSIVE 1548 is the basic wrap dress, and can be worn forwards or backwards. This one sold on eBay for $127.50. 1549 appears to be even more sought after. Some copies of this pattern sold for as low as $44.99, depending on the size (larger sizes seemed to go for more $) and condition of the pattern (uncut patterns obviously sold for more thancut ones).
HOW TO ADD A YOGA WAISTBAND TUTORIAL Put your waistband on the shorts or pants, right sides together, matching the raw edges (There are 3 raw edges – 2 from the waistband and 1 from the shorts). Match the seam of the waistband to the center back seam on the pants or shorts. Stitch, using a stretch stitch. Turn the waistband so the seam allowance points down, and you’re done. HOW TO ADD POCKETS TO A PATTERN Turn the top of the pocket to the wrong side, pressing out corners. Fold under sides of pocket, press. Fold up bottom edges of pocket and press. Topstitch top edge of pocket so the hem stays in place. Pin the pocket onto the shorts, and topstitch in place around 3 sides, making sure to backstitch at beginning and end. GUIDE TO FABRIC SUBSTITUTIONS Knit fabric typically drapes and clings more than most wovens. If the pattern is very fitted however, the substitution becomes less possible. The first thing to look at to determine if this is possible is whether the garment has closures. If it does, next look for HOW the knit is shaped to the body. If darts or seams are used, that’s agood
