A virus was the cause of the streaking in tulip flowers that caused Tulipmania. Lastly, make sure the plant is in a sunny well-drained location keeping it healthy and flowering. Make any needed adjustments and wait to see what blossoms this spring. POWDERY MILDEW ON NINEBARK :: MELINDA MYERSPOWDERY MILDEW ON LEMON TREEPOWDERY MILDEW ON MAPLE TREEPOWDERY MILDEW ON TREE TRUNKWHITE MOLD ON TREE BARKWHITE MOLD ON TREE LEAVESWHITE POWDER ON TREE TRUNK Whenever possible grow ninebarks and other powdery mildew susceptible plants in full or morning sun. Fortunately a healthy plant can tolerate the damage. If you decide to treat, try one of the eco-friendly fungicides like Neem or the Cornell baking soda mix. Cornell University found baking soda helped suppress powdery mildew. STRANGE ORANGE GROWTH ON EVERGREENS :: MELINDA MYERS The gelatinous orange growth is the fruiting stage of cedar–apple rust. This fungal disease spends half of its life on Junipers, often called red cedars, and the remainder on crabapples, hawthorns or quince. It does not kill either host, but can cause some tip dieback and these strange growths on the junipers. GARDENING BENEATH A BLACK WALNUT :: MELINDA MYERS Gardening Beneath a Black Walnut. Will butterfly bush, lilac, dogwood, or other flowering trees and shrubs grow under a black walnut tree. The tree branches are within 12 feet of the proposed planting bed. As you know, black walnut roots, leaves and bark contain juglone. This substance is toxic to many plants. BROWN AND DRIED UP PEONY BUDS :: MELINDA MYERS Botrytis blight is a common fungus disease on peonies. The disease can cause the flower buds to turn brown and fail to open. You may also find purple-black spotting on the leaves and stems. Remove infected buds and leaves as they appear. Fall clean up and a little cooperation from nature (drier spring weather) is usually enough to keep this GROWING ANGEL'S TRUMPET IN A CONTAINER :: MELINDA MYERSANGEL TRUMPET PLANT WINTER CAREGROWING ANGEL TRUMPETS IN POTSGROWING ANGEL TRUMPET FROM SEEDGROWING ANGEL TRUMPET PLANTSPLANTS WITH TRUMPET SHAPED FLOWERSRED TRUMPET SHAPED FLOWERS Check the roots to see if the plant is potbound. If so, move it to the next size container. Adjust your watering and wait to fertilize. If this isn’t the problem review the watering and fertilizing routine. Water the plants thoroughly, so the excess runs out of the drainage hole, whenever the top few inches of soil is crumbly and moist. ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE TREATMENT OF APHIDS ON HONEYSUCKLE This is often enough to keep the populations down and minimize the damage. The next step is insecticidal soap, Neem or another eco-friendly product labeled for aphid control . This insecticidal soap is just a soap that has been formulated to be gentle on plants. Neem is a plant derived insecticide. Repeat applications may beneeded.
LOTS OF FLOWERS BUT NO FRUIT ON CUCUMBERS, SQUASH ANDNO CUCUMBERS ON VINESWHY NO CUCUMBERS ON VINENO FEMALE CUCUMBER FLOWERSWILD CUCUMBER FRUITCUCUMBER FRUIT PROBLEMSCUCUMBER A FRUIT OR VEG This is a common complaint from gardeners growing squash, cucumbers and other vine crops. Start by taking a closer look at the flowers. The first set of flowers produced is all male flowers. The next set of flowers is a mix of male and female. Look for the miniature fruit at the base of the female flower. Now pollination can occur, so the fruit PREPARING TROPICAL HIBISCUS TO GO BACK OUTDOORS IN SPRING Preparing Tropical Hibiscus to Go Back Outdoors in Spring. Every summer we grow hibiscus on our deck. BARE PATCHES IN ZOYSIAGRASS LAWN :: MELINDA MYERS Keep your zoysia lawn at least 1 ½ inches tall and remove no more than 1/3 of its total height with each mowing. Taller grass forms deeper roots and is more pest and drought resistant. With proper care the healthy grass may fill in the dead areas. Otherwise try seeding or planting sprigs in these bare spots. Consult your local extension DEALING WITH FLOOD DAMAGE :: MELINDA MYERS Dealing with Flood Damage. Assess the damage, manage hazards, and wait for the soil to dry. Then always be sure to manage early plantings of food crops safely by FALL WEED CONTROL :: MELINDA MYERS Fall Weed Control. Weeds often gain a foothold in the lawn during the stressful summer months. The temperatures are finally starting to cool and you are looking and feeling a bit fresher. LILY OF THE VALLEY TURNS BROWN EVERY YEAR :: MELINDA MYERS Lily of the Valley Turns Brown Every Year. I have a number of lilies of the valley planted in a shaded area on the northwest corner of my house. Every year in late summer and fall, the lilies begin to turn brown and wither. They seem to resurrect and bloom once again thefollowing spring.
MEALYBUGS ON HOUSEPLANTS :: MELINDA MYERS Mealybugs on Houseplants. Several of my houseplants are covered with something that looks like bits of cotton. There is also a clear sticky substance on some of the leaves. WILD CUCUMBER :: MELINDA MYERS Wild Cucumber. We discovered a long vine of 30-40 feet long growing around a large evergreen tree in northern Waukesha (WI) county. This vine had prickly seed pods. HYDRANGEA HASN'T FLOWERED AFTER PRUNING :: MELINDA MYERS Hydrangea Hasn't Flowered After Pruning. My 4-foot hydrangea hasn’t bloomed since I bought it. As instructed, I cut the plant back in fall when the leaves and stem are yellow. ROSE BUDS TURNED BROWN AND NEVER OPENED :: MELINDA MYERS Rose Buds Turned Brown and Never Opened. My rose bush is producing lots of buds. Many of the buds turn brown and never fully open. What can I do to fix this problem? ESTABLISHED PEONY HAS FAILED TO BLOOM :: MELINDA MYERS Established Peony Has Failed to Bloom. I have an established peony bush that has not bloomed in the past two years. It is growing in the sun and no soil has been added to bury the roots deeper.*
