SUNFLOWER SEEDS
Every Monday I’ll post a short reflection, a simple musing on some aspect of spirituality— the everyday kind of spirituality that includes things like walking in the park, slicing an onion for the casserole, caring for a child, studying for an exam, reading a line from scripture, laughing at a joke, or mourning a significant loss. ABOUT – SUNFLOWER SEEDS About Sister Melannie Svoboda, SND. Sister Melannie Svoboda has been a Sister of Notre Dame of Chardon, OH for over 50 years. During that time she has served as a high school and college teacher, novice director, and provincial (president) of her congregation. She also ministered in the Jesuit novitiate in Detroit for six years.THE GIFT OF FLOWERS
The Gift of Flowers. by Melannie Svoboda SND on June 22, 2015. At this time of the year, our convent yard here in Chardon is graced with many flowers. In spring we said, “Hello again!” to our purple lilacs and white lilies-of-the-valley. Then we welcomed our azeleas, roses, and wachmacallits.
CONTACT - SUNFLOWER SEEDS Contact Sr. Melannie. If you would like to contact me for a possible speaking engagement, please use the form below. I will respond to you as soon as I am able. I am not able to respond to requests for personal advice or any type of spiritual direction through this blog. Thank you for understanding. PRAYER FOR 2020 AND 2021 Prayer for 2021: Loving Creator, we ask for your blessings on 2021. For we firmly believe that you have been with us in the Past, you are with us in the Present, and you will be with us in the Future. We face the future with wonder and excitement for the LET’S THANK OUR ALTAR SERVERS One of the steps, acolyte, referred to the altar server. So for centuries, altar servers were young men studying to be priests. But over time, due to changing circumstances, the role of altar server was opened to all males in the church. But not to females. In fact, in 1755, Pope Benedict XIV, formally forbade females near the altar. THE NEED FOR SPIRITUAL MAINTENANCE The Need for Spiritual Maintenance. Here’s an interesting fact: it takes hundreds of pumps in the New York City subway system to keep water out of the tunnels. If those pumps did not receive regular maintenance and if they suddenly stopped working, the subway tunnels would be flooded within thirty-six hours. Thirty-six hours! THE LINK BETWEEN LOVE AND SUFFERING The question “were you there?” does cause me to tremble when I think of all the chaos in today’s world. Terrorism, so many refugees knocking on the doors of nations seeking a peaceful home somewhere in this world, the internet warping of young minds seeking someone trustworthy and solid to believe in, broken relationships tearing families apart, images of children whose lives are cut too MURPHY’S LAW AND A FEW COROLLARIES Murphy’s Law and a Few Corollaries. Most of us have heard of Murphy’s Law. It is the popular adage that says, “Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong” or “Things will go wrong in any given situation, if you give them the chance.”. Who wrote Murphy’s Law? “OVERDUE” BY VALERIE SCHULTZ The result of that fortunate mistake is her new book, Overdue: A Dewey Decimal System of Grace in which she shares some of her experiences during her fourteen years as a prison librarian.
