WHY DOES MY JAW HURT WHEN I EAT? TMD is often called TMJ, which is actually the name for the affected jaw joint, known as the temporomandibular joint. Besides jaw pain and pain after eating, people who have TMD may notice: Jaw popping, clicking, or a grinding, gravelly sound when using the jaw. Regular headaches, especially upon waking in the morning or after using thejaw.
HOW TO TELL IF YOUR JAW IS MISALIGNED An overbite means the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth too much, while an underbite means that the lower teeth sit outside of the upper teeth when biting down. These are both indicators of a possible jaw misalignment. An underbite or an overbite does not necessarily need to be corrected or treated. CAN YOUR SINUSES AFFECT JAW PAIN? Reason #1: The sinuses and the TMJ are adjacent to each other. Humans have sinuses in the cheekbones, between the eyes, and above the bridge of the nose. They occupy a lot of space in the face and, when some of that facial space swells or becomes infected, any pain and pressure can easily make its way over to your jaw. HOW DOES OSTEOPOROSIS AFFECT MY JAW? More than 50 million people in the U.S. have osteoporosis, a serious disease that causes the bones to lose density and become weak. Osteoporosis commonly affects the hips, spine, and wrists, but there’s another critically important bone that can be affected by this disease: your jaw. WHAT TO DO IF YOUR JAW IS LOCKED OPEN A heating pad on the face, preferably with moist heat, can help loosen and relax it. Hold the heat on for several minutes before you try to move the jaw. At this point, it may be able to move on its own again. Try gentle movement from side to side. Slowly and gently try slight sideways movements of the jaw. WHAT CAUSES JAW INFLAMMATION? The term “jaw inflammation” is frequently discussed with TMD patients, and it is an important aspect to understand. This is because jaw inflammation usually plays a key role in TMD symptoms – and getting rid of it is often how patients get relief. But what is jaw inflammation, and why does it happen? HOW TO TELL IF YOUR JAW IS MISALIGNED Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) works hard each day to help you talk, eat, drink, and even breathe. And, most of us don’t think about this critical joint unless it starts to cause issues. WHY DOES MY JAW HURT WHEN I EAT? Sometimes there is no clear cause of the pain, and yet, over time, the pain can spread to other areas of the face, jaw and neck.
