SCOPES OF PRACTICE
The Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 requires us to define the areas of medicine and specialties (known as ‘scopes of practice’) that make up the practice of medicine in New Zealand. COMMUNICATION & CONSENT The Council's communication and consent standards are about doctors' interactions with patients and family members. They cover how doctors should convey information, including the use of communications technology; the importance of trust between doctors and patients when discussing treatment options and making informed choices; the maintenance of patient records; and how doctors PRIMARY SOURCE VERIFICATION OF QUALIFICATIONS (EPIC Primary source verification of qualifications (EPIC) Doctors who hold overseas qualifications and who want to apply for registration in New Zealand must have key documents verified from their primary source. Since November 2017 Council has required primary source verification using the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates SUPERVISION OF INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATES All international medical graduates (IMGs) registered in a provisional general, provisional vocational and special purpose scope of practice must be supervised. This is to support their practice while they become familiar with the New Zealand health system and the expected standard of medical practice. PROVIDING CARE TO YOURSELF AND THOSE CLOSE TO YOU Council has received an increasing number of notifications regarding self-treatment or providing of care to family members. We strongly encourage you to read this statement. You may only provide treatment to yourself or those close to you in exceptional circumstances, such as when someone has an illness or injury that requires immediateattention.

OUR STANDARDS
The principal function of the Medical Council of New Zealand is to protect the health and safety of the public by ensuring that doctors are competent and fit to practise. We do this by setting standards of clinical and cultural competence and ethical conduct for doctors. GOOD MEDICAL PRACTICE A doctor's first concern is to take care of their patient, and to do so with respect, honesty and professionalism. Our "Good Medical Practice" publication sets out the principles and values that define good medical practice, and provides guidance to doctors on the standards we expect of them in all aspects of their professionalbehaviour.
