Dec 30, 2016 Let's build a URL shortener with Express (and deploy to Heroku) - Part 1. Although I’m most comfortable developing in PHP, I’ve found myself reaching for node.js quite often for small-ish scripting tasks. I’ve covered a couple of these projects in previous tutorials: Amazon Price Tracker and CLI Weatherman. These are all purely command line applications, though.SEBASTIAN MARULANDA

DEBUGGING THE COMMAND-LINE WEATHERMANThird-party APIs
allow us to create rich and immersive web applications by giving us access to data that we otherwise couldn’t produce ourselves. Though there are many benefits to using outside libraries, ultimately that code is outside our control, and can easily compromise the stability of our application. I recently experienced this firsthand. __ Tags: node.js , npm __ Project: https://github.com/smarulanda/cli-weathermanJUN 25, 2017
LET'S BUILD A URL SHORTENER WITH EXPRESS (AND DEPLOY TO HEROKU) -PART 2
Welcome back! If you followed along in Part 1 of this tutorial, you should have a locally running Express application with the appropriate routes set up for shortening URLs. These routes won’t actually perform any logic just yet, but let’s try and get our boilerplate off our local machine and up onto the web. __ Tags: node.js , express ,postresql , heroku

Although I’m most comfortable developing in PHP, I’ve found myself reaching for node.js quite often for small-ish scripting tasks. I’ve covered a couple of these projects in previous tutorials: Amazon Price Tracker and CLI Weatherman . These are all purely command line applications, though. Let’s try building an entire webapplication.

WRITING A COMMAND-LINE WEATHERMAN AND PUBLISHING TO NPM Command-line utilities can be intimidating to even the most seasoned of web developers. We tend to get comfortable with merely a passing knowledge of the shell. An ssh here, a cd and git pull there. Maybe a /etc/init.d/apache2 restart if things get really hairy. __ Tags: node.js , npm __ Project: https://github.com/smarulanda/cli-weathermanSEP 25, 2015
AUTOMATICALLY DEPLOY GITHUB BRANCHES TO A SUBDOMAIN Even if you’re the sole developer on a project, big or small, I always advocate using git for version control. Using version control software removes the tediousness of having to FTP individual files up to your production server, allows you to view the entire history of your repository, and encourage the use of “feature branches” that can be merged into the “master branch” once ready. __ Tags: github , bash , webhooks __ Project: https://github.com/smarulanda/github-to-subdomainJUL 16, 2015
WRITING AN AMAZON PRICE TRACKER WITH PUSHBULLET NOTIFICATIONS INNODE.JS
In this tutorial, we’re going to write a small Node.js script that will check if an Amazon product has dropped below a certain price. We’ll have the script ping the product page every minute, and if the price has dropped enough, we’ll send out a Pushbullet notification. __ Tags: node.js , pushbullet __ Project: https://github.com/smarulanda/amazon-price-trackerAPR 15, 2015
BUILDING A LIGHTWEIGHT PHP ROUTER Non-semantic URLs are out. There’s no reason for your users to see a long chain of query strings in their address bar. They are not memorable, they give the user very little feedback, and they may even expose your server-side setup. With just a little bit of back-end wizardry we can turn something like this: __ Tags: php , apache __ Project: https://github.com/smarulanda/SiestaMAR 12, 2015
WRITING A SIMPLE JQUERY PLUGIN jQuery is everywhere. Once you’re familiar with the syntax it makes DOM manipulation and interactivity a snap. Thanks to its ease-of-use there is no shortage of developers who rely on jQuery. This means there are plenty of free, open-source, and powerful jQuery plugins just waiting to be used in your project. __ Tags: jquery , javascript, velociraptors

HOW I GOT THIS SITE RUNNING WITH JEKYLL AND AUTO-DEPLOYING WITH GIT I really like Jekyll . Well, that’s mostly true. More so, I really like what Jekyll isn’t. It’s not an over-bloated CMS. It doesn’t have a WYSIWYG editor. It doesn’t have a file-uploader. It doesn’t require a database. Basically, it’s not Wordpress. __ Tags: jekyll , git , digitalocean, apache , bash
