ADVICE FOR PASTOR SEARCH COMMITTEES 4. Exercise endurance and beware of exhaustion. In the Presbyterian Church (USA), the process of searching for a new pastor usually takes at least a year. It can take twice as long if the search committee is also responsible for doing a large-scale mission study as the first part of the discernment process. SPIRITUAL GIFTS IN THE BODY OF CHRIST Spiritual gifts include: a word of wisdom, a word of knowledge, faith, workings of power, a prophecy, discernments of spirits, kinds of tongues, an interpretation of tongues. Notice the variation in Paul's language. "A word of wisdom," singular, can be a gift. THE PC(USA) AND CHURCH PROPERTY The Book of Order of the PC (USA) states that all church property is “held in trust . . . for the use and benefit of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)” (G-8.0201). Taken out of context, this passage might suggest that any congregation that leaves the PC (USA) must always surrender its property. BEING THE PEOPLE OF GOD If we look closely at the God's creation, especially his creation of human beings, then we'll head off in the right direction for our search for being the people of God. In Genesis 1 God creates the heavens and the earth, the waters and the sky, the land and the plants, the birds and the fish, and finally the animals. PLANNING, GOALS, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT 3. Respect the ways God has led in the past. The point of Christian planning is to discern God's future and make appropriate steps to realize it. Planning, by definition, is a future-directed enterprise. But planning that makes room for the Spirit will take seriously what God has said and done in the past. VOCATION AND RELATIONSHIP Our vocation, therefore, isn't separate from relationship. In fact, our vocation into relationship. God calls us, not into a solitary life of salvation and service, but into a profound partnership with Christ and with the community of his disciples. Let me suggest four possible implications of 1 Corinthians 1:9: 1. Option #2 is the way of legalistic judgmentalism, in which gays and lesbians are condemned and rejected for their sin, often with a harshness that REFLECTIONS ON THE NARNIA MOVIE We tend either to make Him a powerful God who is barely human, or a genuine human who is hardly God. Speaking the truth in love means that we communicate "with all humility and gentleness," as we read in Ephesians 4:2. It means we don't return anger for anger, attack for attack.
