Mariner’s Astrolabe, Portuguese, 1645, by Nicholao Ruffo, The Mariners’ Museum, (2000.52.1) The mariner’s astrolabe was an navigation tool used for taking the altitude of the sun or stars. Its history dates as far back as the Ancient Period and into Medieval Period. Its name means “to take a PEDRO ÁLVARES CABRAL Pedro Álvares Cabral was a Portuguese explorer who is credited with discovering Brazil in South America. He landed near present-day Bahia off the eastern coast of South America. Several years after Cabral, the Portuguese began colonizing the area. They found great profit by exporting lumber, specifically the brazilwood tree.VIKING SHIPS
The Vikings’ marine success was due, in large part, to the seaworthiness of their ships. These ships were very versatile, allowing the Vikings to sail on the open sea as well as the narrow rivers of the European mainland. The Vikings were the best ship designers of their time, and much like the Phoenicians they were master navigators and sailors.JUAN PONCE DE LEON
Juan Ponce de Leon petitioned King Ferdinand of Spain asking for royal permission to journey to Puerto Rico. The king agreed. In August 1508, Ponce de Leon gathered a crew and some boats, and set sail. From 1508-1509, he explored the island, and founded the oldest settlement of Caparra near San Juan. Introduction. Francisco Coronado was a Spanish governor in modern day Mexico who went on to explore the southwest United States. His expedition was one that was prompted by stories of myth and riches. He was looking for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold. This journey took him into new areas not yet previously explored by Europeans.*
