Originally built for a Norse king in around 1200AD, Castle Rushen was developed by successive rulers until the 1600s. During its time it was used as a fortress, royal residence, a mint and even a prison. One of the earliest remaining depictions of the emblem is on the Manx Sword of State thought to have been made in 1300A.D. The Three Legs of Mann symbol also appeared on Manx coins from the 17 th Century. It is not known for sure why the emblem was adopted by the 13 th Century kings but it may just have been that it was striking and distinctive. Grove Museum of Victorian Life – Thie Tashtee ‘Yn Chell’. Built by the Gibbs, a wealthy merchant family from Liverpool as their summer retreat. Later it became the permanent family home. The Gibb sisters, Alice and Janet continued to live in the house until their deaths in the 1970’s. Located in the ancient capital of the Isle of Man, Castletown, this impressive fortress was once home to the Kings and Lords of Mann. Originally built for a Norse king in around 1200AD, Castle Rushen was developed by successive rulers until the 1600s. During its time it was used as a fortress, royal residence, a mint and even a prison. INSPIRED BY THE MANX LOGHTAN Manx Loghtan. The Manx Loaghtan is one of the oldest and most striking breeds in the British Isles. A hardy breed, the Loaghtan requires little in additional feed and are able to survive in harsh conditions. Brown in appearance, both ewes and rams are usually horned, sometimes having four or six horns. Bernard Caine. – Posted on Monday 2nd June 2014. Bernard Caine sadly passed away on Friday night. Bernard was a member of the Trustees of the Manx Museum and National Trust for very many years and held various positions within the Trust including Chairman. His contribution to the Manx language and to the Island’s heritage wasincalculable.

GROVE MUSEUM OF VICTORIAN LIFE - THIE TASHTEE ‘YN CHELL’ Built by the Gibbs, a wealthy merchant family from Liverpool as their summer retreat. Later it became the permanent family home. The Gibb sisters, Alice and Janet continued to live in the house until their deaths in the 1970’s. The house provides a real insight into the lives of this family from Victorian times to the 20th Century. THE GREAT LAXEY WHEEL - QUEEYL VOOAR LAKSEY The Great Laxey Wheel (Queeyl Vooar Laksey) or Lady Isabella (as she is also known) is the largest working waterwheel in the world. A brilliant example of Victorian engineering she was built in 1854 to pump water from the Laxey mines. Today a climb to the top is rewarded with panoramic views across the Laxey Valley. OLD HOUSE OF KEYS - SHENN THIE YN CHIARE AS FEED The former home of the Manx Parliament and centre of 19th Century political life on the Isle of Man. Animated portraits of Keys members and a simulated model of Mr Speaker bring the debating chamber to life. The Secretary of the House welcomes you to join in the debates on law setting in this participatory experience. OLD GRAMMAR SCHOOL - YN CHENN SCOILL GHRAMMEYOYS Built around 1200AD as the first church for the settlement that grew up around Castle Rushen. Later becoming a school for boys as it is now depicted. It is the oldest roofed structure still standing on the Isleof Man today.
