MANHATTAN CAT SPECIALISTS Manhattan Cat Specialists Experienced & Compassionate Upper West Side Veterinarians. At Manhattan Cat Specialists, our fully trained veterinarians and clinical staff recognize the unique character of every cat, and we treat each of our feline patients with dignity and kindness as if they were our own.

ADOPTION CORNER

Adoption Corner. Working with a very limited number of reputable rescue organizations, our hospital obtains kittens (and the occasional adult cat) to be adopted into loving and caring homes. All kittens that arrive here at our hospital are given a thorough physical examination. Each kitten is tested individually for the feline

UPPER WEST SIDE CAT DENTISTRY Your cat will have fresh breath, be more comfortable eating, and enjoy meals more. He or she will have the opportunity to enjoy better health and live a long and happier life. For more information about our Upper West Side cat dentistry services, call (917) 242-4235 t PANCREATITIS IN THE CAT Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) is a common gastrointestinal disorder in dogs and cats. In the past, the incidence of pancreatitis in cats was thought to be low, but recent studies suggest the contrary. The true incidence of the disease is unknown, however, as many dogs and cats have mild disease and are not presented

to a veterinarian.

FOUL SMELLING FELINES In my experience, halitosis is the most common cause of obvious foul odor in cats. Dental disease, oral cancer, and kidney failure are the most common causes of foul breath seen in my feline practice. The third category would be cats with a systemic illness as a cause of the foul odor. This is usually readily apparent to the veterinarian. HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY Although the disease has been reported in cats ranging in age from 3 months to 17 years, most cases occur in middle age, usually between the ages of 4 and 8. The clinical signs of HCM can vary greatly from cat to cat. Some cats present with very non-specific signs, such as lethargy, inappetence, weight loss, hiding, and reluctance to

socialize

SEVERE GINGIVITIS/STOMATITIS IN CATS Severe Gingavitis / Stomatitis. The goal of treatment is to decrease the inflammatory response. If a hypersensitivity to dental plaque is believed to be the major factor in an individual cat’s LPGS, a thorough dental scaling and polishing should be performed. Ideally, cats’ teeth should be brushed regularly after the dental scaling,

however

INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is an uncontrolled or excessive gastrointestinal inflammatory response, resulting in the infiltration of inflammatory cells into various segments of the gastrointestinal tract. There is no age, gender, or breed predisposition for feline IBD, however, most cats tend to be middle aged or older. LEARN FROM VETERINARIANS IF CATS GRIEVE FOR OTHER CAT? Cats grieve for other cats will require extra attention, compassion, and reassurance during this period. If the surviving cat had access to the outdoors, this should be restricted, as the cat may stray off into unfamiliar territory and get into dangerous situations as it searches for the lost companion. URINE SPRAYING AND MARKING ADVICE FROM THE VETERINARIANS Urine marking is most common in intact (non-neutered) male cats. When an intact male sprays urine, it will have the characteristic “tom cat” odor that is strong and pungent. Neutering will change the odor, and may reduce the cat’s motivation for spraying, but approximately 10% of neutered males and 5% of spayed females will

continue urine

The reason why linear foreign bodies can cause so much damage is the way they create an intestinal obstruction. Usually, one end of the string becomes anchored, either by wrapping around the base of the tongue, or by getting lodged in the pylorus (the part FELINE MAMMARY HYPERPLASIA Although mammary hyperplasia is an uncommon and relatively benign condition, many cats develop significant clinical signs of illness, including lethargy, loss of appetite, and painful, uncomfortable mammary glands. Despite the benign description, most of the cases that I’ve encountered have been fraught with complications.

UPPER WEST SIDE CAT DENTISTRY Your cat will have fresh breath, be more comfortable eating, and enjoy meals more. He or she will have the opportunity to enjoy better health and live a long and happier life. For more information about our Upper West Side cat dentistry services, call (917) 242-4235 t FOUL SMELLING FELINES In my experience, halitosis is the most common cause of obvious foul odor in cats. Dental disease, oral cancer, and kidney failure are the most common causes of foul breath seen in my feline practice. The third category would be cats with a systemic illness as a cause of the foul odor. This is usually readily apparent to the veterinarian. PANCREATITIS IN THE CAT Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) is a common gastrointestinal disorder in dogs and cats. In the past, the incidence of pancreatitis in cats was thought to be low, but recent studies suggest the contrary. The true incidence of the disease is unknown, however, as many dogs and cats have mild disease and are not presented

to a veterinarian.

CANCER IN CATS

Cats are susceptible to a variety of cancers.Among the most devastating are lymphosarcoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and mammary (breast) cancer. Lymphosarcoma is a cancer arising from lymphoid tissues involving any organ.Affected cats ranges, on average, from 2 to 6 years, although any age cat is susceptible.Infection with the

feline leukemia

LINEAR FOREIGN BODIES IN CATS The most common linear foreign bodies reported in cats are string, carpet, and plastic. The reason why linear foreign bodies can cause so much damage is the way they create an intestinal obstruction. Usually, one end of the string becomes anchored, either by wrapping around the base of the tongue, or by getting lodged in the pylorus (the part

MULTIPLE MYELOMA

Veterinarians currently employ two main strategies for managing pain in companion animals. The first strategy is pre-emptive analgesia. This involves giving pain medication before the patient is exposed to the painful procedure. The second strategy is multi-modality therapy. As the name implies, this strategy takes advantage of the fact that various classes of analgesic drugs have additive FELINE MAMMARY HYPERPLASIA Although mammary hyperplasia is an uncommon and relatively benign condition, many cats develop significant clinical signs of illness, including lethargy, loss of appetite, and painful, uncomfortable mammary glands. Despite the benign description, most of the cases that I’ve encountered have been fraught with complications. MANHATTAN CAT SPECIALISTS IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED. Tuesday, May 26, 2020 Manhattan Cat Specialists would like to thank everyone in our community for your continued kindness and support. As you know, we made the difficult decision a few weeks ago to temporarily close our hospital. We wanted to provide an update that our temporary closure may be a little longer than we originally

anticipated.

It is very important to us that our patients continue to receive the care they need when they need it. Unfortunately, until further notice we will not be able to fill prescriptions and are referring our clients to New York Cat Hospital (212) 535-6369 for continuing care

for your pet.

If you need access to your patient records, please contact us via email at mcs@manhattancats.com and we ask that you allow a few days

for us to respond.

We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to being able to serve the clients and pets we love soon. We will keep you updated, until then stay well.

With warm regards,
