This writing style guide covers the fundamentals of English usage and writing. It includes sections on grammar and mechanics, editing, formatting, academic citation and research documentation, including the latest MLA and APA style guidelines. THE MOUTH, PHARYNX, AND ESOPHAGUS Saliva is essentially (95.5 percent) water. The remaining 4.5 percent is a complex mixture of ions, glycoproteins, enzymes, growth factors, and waste products. Perhaps the most important ingredient in salvia from the perspective of digestion is the enzyme salivary amylase, which initiates the breakdown of carbohydrates.Food does not spend enough time in the mouth to allow all the carbohydrates SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES Sociologists study social events, interactions, and patterns, and they develop a theory in an attempt to explain why things work as they do. A sociological theory seeks to explain social phenomena.Theories can be used to create a testable proposition, called a hypothesis, about society (Allan 2006).. Theories vary in scope depending on the scale of the issues that they are meant to explain. REINFORCEMENT THEORY Reinforcement. Positive reinforcement attempts to increase the frequency of a behavior by rewarding that behavior. For example, if an employee identifies a new market opportunity that creates profit, an organization may give her a bonus. OVERVIEW OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM The function of the digestive system is to break down the foods you eat, release their nutrients, and absorb those nutrients into the body. Although the small intestine is the workhorse of the system, where the majority of digestion occurs, and where most of the released nutrients are absorbed into the blood or lymph, each of the digestive system organs makes a vital contribution to this process. ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY I Table of Contents. Course Contents About This Course; Course Contents at a Glance; Faculty Resources Faculty Resources Overview STAGES OF NEGOTIATION Books have been written, and classes have been taught on the art of negotiation. The ability to master negotiation strategy is a coveted skill in the business world. SPECIAL SENSES: TASTE (GUSTATION) Primary Taste Sensations. As previously mentioned, five different taste sensations are currently recognized. The first, salty, is simply the sense of Na + concentration in the saliva. As the Na + concentration becomes high outside the taste cells, a strong concentration gradient drives their diffusion into the cells. This depolarizes the cells, leading them to release neurotransmitter. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM PROCESSES AND REGULATION Food leaves the mouth when the tongue and pharyngeal muscles propel it into the esophagus. This act of swallowing, the last voluntary act until defecation, is an example of propulsion, which refers to the movement of food through the digestive tract. It includes both the voluntary process of swallowing and the involuntary process ofperistalsis.
IMMUNOLOGICAL MEMORY Figure 1. After initially binding an antigen to the B cell receptor (BCR), a B cell internalizes the antigen and presents it on MHC II. A helper T cell recognizes the MHC II–antigen complex and activatesthe B cell.
WHAT IS PERSONALITY? Personality refers to the long-standing traits and patterns that propel individuals to consistently think, feel, and behave in specific ways. Our personality is what makes us unique individuals. Each person has an idiosyncratic pattern of enduring, long-term characteristics and a manner in which he or she interacts with other individuals and the world around them.
