Our flagship projects focus on the human-animal bond, helping young people at risk, cancer patients in hospital and the elderly in care, just to name a few. While Lort Smith is perhaps most well-known for vet care and adoption services, we also offer a range of community-focused programs to help people in need, as well as theirpets.

Pet Therapy. Lort Smith Pet Therapy (previously known as PALS) has been running for over 30 years and is a free community service. The program coordinates visits to hospitals, aged-care facilities, disability services and other centres across Melbourne, by volunteers accompanied by their own specially assessed and approved dogs. Contact your local council to collect the animal. By law, you must hand over an animal you have found to the local council. Please be careful if you decide to approach the animal. We were surrendered through no fault of our own, unfortunately our previous carers developed severe allergies to us. We are a very bonded pair looking for an adults-only home where we will be kept indoors and as the only pets of the house. Coronavirus (COVID-19) update Lort Smith CONTINUES TO OPERATE WHILE COMPLYING WITH GOVERNMENT DIRECTION. Protecting the health and welfare of clients, volunteers, staff and animals remains our top priority. FROM TUESDAY 9 JUNE Lort Smith will take the first step towards resuming normal operations. This will be carried out in a phased approach in accordance with government directives. Clients are advised to CHECK THIS WEBSITE REGULARLY for the most up-to-date operationalinformation.
NIGHT HOURS
The hospital will close the emergency service at 10pm every night. ARRIVAL / WAITING AREA Clients are asked to present at the reception desk upon arrival. Up to 15 people can sit in the waiting room at a time. Depending on the numbers of clients attending, you may be asked to wait outside the building or in your car. A distance of 1.5m is to be maintainedwherever possible.
CONSULTATIONS
One person can accompany their pet into the consultation room with the vet. However you may be asked to step outside if a nurse is needed to help with the examination or treatment of the pet. A distance of 1.5m is to be maintained wherever possible. Consultations will be strictly capped to 15 minutes.More info
