THE CULPER SPY LETTER: A NEW DISCOVERY AT THE LONG ISLAND In August 2020 the Long Island Museum discovered an uncatalogued Culper Spy Ring letter in its collections. Acquired by the museum in December 1951, the handwritten double-sided letter measures 9 3/16” x 7 5/8”, is dated November 8, 1779, and is from Benjamin Tallmadge (using his alias, John Bolton) to Robert Townsend (alias, SamuelCulper Jr.).

The museum complex is comprised of nine acres with three modern exhibition buildings and five historic structures. THE CARRIAGE MUSEUM
The Going Places Gallery features vehicles commonly used on Long Island, along with a huge fiber-optic map illustrating the development of regional transportation routes.. The Carriage Exposition Gallery, based on the 1893 World’s Fair transportation building, highlights the finest vehicles money could buy, and the carriage-making companiesthat created them.

The jewel in our crown is the Tally-Ho Road Coach, 1875, made by Holland & Holland, in London and brought to New York by Colonel Delancey Kane (1845-1915). Visitors are welcome to explore the Carriage Museum and Art Museum however the History Museum will remain closed. To help ensure public safety and limited capacity, the LIM will require timed ticket registration. Visitors must register for Museum admission online inadvance.
Timed admission will be available for: Friday – Sunday 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 – 5:00 p.m The LIM will reopen with modified hours; Friday – Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. Physical distancing will be required and all visitors and staff must wear face masks at all times while on site. The LIM follows CDC-prescribed cleaning protocols for all buildings and will clean bathrooms and high-touch surfaces after each visitationsession.

THE LONG ISLAND MUSEUM Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate, dedicated to enhancing the lives of adults and children with an understanding of Long Island's rich history anddiverse cultures.
The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and Sunday from noon to 5. Regular admission is $10 per person, $7 for seniors and $5 for students ages six to 17. Children under six and museum members arefree.
