ORIGINS OF LONDON STREET NAMES Origins of London Street Names. Ever wondered where some of London's more unusual street names come from? Prior to the nineteenth century, street names were typically generic and descriptive, usually named after the goods sold in them e.g. Bread Street.LONDON POPULATION
London has been a trading centre for nearly 2000 years, from the time the Romans had possession of it; relics of Roman buildings are frequently found, and part of the old Roman walls remains to this day. LONDON IN ROMAN TIMES London in Roman Times. London or Londinium as it was called by the invading Roman army led by the Emperor Claudius, was established as a town by the Romans in their invasion of 43 AD. There is disagreement over whether a major settlement existed prior to this, though evidence of farming, burial and traces of habitation have been unearthed.THE WAKEFIELD TOWER
The work now to be seen points to it having been built by Henry III. The Great Hall, memorable as the scene of Anne Boleyn's Trial, adjoined it, but was pulled down during the Commonwealth. In 1360 the records of the Kingdom, which had previously been kept in the White Tower, were removed here, and this is called in ancient surveyssometimes

POLLUTION OF THE THAMES Pollution of the Thames. During the long course of ages, London in its constant growth had been systematically polluting the beautiful river by pouring into it its sewage and rendering it one huge sewer.
