QUEEN SOFIA MAGDALENA'S DRESS Sofia Magdalena wore this dress when she married king Gustav III in 1766. Her wedding dress is one of the most well known objects at the Royal Armoury. The silver fabric of the dress, with a pattern depicting little garlands, flowers and leaves, was made in France and purchased in Hamburg. The sides of the skirt are created using pleats in order to achieve the intended curvature. The skirt originally had openings at the sides, decorated with lace. At a later date, the opening has been altered and a slit created. It is now uncertain what side of the skirtwas at the front.
CONSTRUCTION OF THE SLEEVES The sleeves consist of two parts, a shorter upper part in doubled silver fabric set in knife pleats reinforced with whalebone, and a longer one made of patterned gauze set in inverted pleats. THE STAYS | LIVRUSTKAMMAREN The frame of the bodice consists of white silk rep and linen. Between these layers there are long, thin pieces of whale bone in channels sewn with backstitches. The silver fabric of the dress has subsequently been attached on the outside with stab-stitches and folded over the band. One of the temporary tackings from the dressmaking process is still in place. The silver fabric of the dress, with a pattern depicting little garlands, flowers and leaves, was made in France and purchased in Hamburg. The larger sections of the skirt and train are made up of entire widths of fabric, with the selvedge visible from the inside. The width is 54 cm which is exactly 20 French inches.AN ALTERED SKIRT
This sort of sleeve was called engagentes and was customary on a royal gala dress, a “robe de cour”. THE PARADE SHIELD OF KING ERIK XIV OF SWEDEN IN 3D The Parade Shield of King Erik XIV of Sweden. The shield is part of a suit of armour that was delivered to the King in 1562. The whole set was problably made in Arboga and then sent to Antwerp where it was decorated by the goldsmith Eliseus Libaerts, following drawings by the French artist Etienne Delaune.
