EXPLORING BUFFALO, NEW YORK: THE RICHARDSON OLMSTED COMPLEX Originally called Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane, construction began 187o and was completed in 1896. It was an “experimental” hospital with patients on its grounds until it closed in 1974. While it is now basically on the campus of Buffalo State College, it was originally in the middle of nowhere, on about 200 acres of farmland. An intense sweetness of sap from freshly cut trees thickens the air, a feathery stash of pine branches piled on one side of the path, segments of a trunk tossed on the other. A squirrel pauses in front of me, then scurries off to perch, statue-still, on a rickety wooden fence post. Holland Park is small, but the CREATIVITY & COMMUNITY ON LONDON'S EEL PIE ISLAND The first time I wrote about southwest London’s Eel Pie Island was back in 2010 when I stumbled on this magical private community by accident on what happened to be an Open Studios weekend. I wrote again in 2013 when I returned intentionally to dig a bit deeper into the history and the stories of the people who work there. Most recently, I wrote during summer 2016 about another visit. It was EXPLORING LONDON: EEL PIE ISLAND It was the legendary Eel Pie Island Hotel that the scene revolved around. In the 20s and 30s, it hosted ballroom dancing sessions. In the 50s, the focus turned to jazz. The 60s brought the rock n’ rollers whose rowdy antics eventually caused so much damage that the hotel was forced to close. In 1970, it became the UK’s largesthippie commune.
EXPLORING LONDON: PUTNEY WALKS Exploring London: Putney Walks. I pull up my hood and head out into the rain, stroller covered, baby asleep. It’s early on a mid-week morning in Putney, the quiet leafy southwest London neighbourhood we moved to from the other side of the murky Thames a few years ago. It’s family-friendly, mostly residential with a busy high street, a RECIPE: FRESH OREGANO AND ONION BREAD Remove from heat and cool. While that’s cooling, start chopping oregano. Pour 1 1/2 cups warm water into a bowl and add your yeast and sugar. Leave it be for about 10 minutes until it’s foamy. Put 4 cups of flour in a large bowl. Add the salt and stir. Add in the organo, onion and yeast mixture. A NIGHT OF CAMPING AT LAZY ACRES IN EAST OTTO, NEW YORK As much as I love the throbbing pulse of city life in London, it’s nice to go home and indulge in a bit of nature. Jorge and I spent a few days in North Tonawanda, New York with my family this month before heading down to the Big Apple (more on that later). While we were there, my brother took us, and our parents, to his sanctuary – the Lazy Acres campgrounds about an hour drive away in TRAVEL TALES: A RIOT OF COLOUR PUERTO DE LA CRUZ, TENERIFE Travel Tales: A Riot of Colour Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. Melting under the Spanish summer sun, we stood looking up at the whitewashed walls of La Ranilla Espacio Artesano, an old cottage now an artisan shop. The entire top of the building was wrapped in a quilt of squares delicately knitted in a HOME - LITTLE OBSERVATIONIST This foggy winter morning, where bare branches hun. If you came looking for the gritty, grimy side of London, you’ll have to wait for another post because this week I’m bringing you to the beautiful Petersham Nurseries in Richmond. Jorge suggested a visit while my parents were here from New York last week. None of us had been before. We were dropped off near the entrance by a pathway lined with FIQUE: COLOMBIAN HANDICRAFTS FROM PLANTS TO PRODUCTS & THE Fique: Colombian Handicrafts from Plants to Products & the People Involved. Earlier this week, Jorge wrote a blog post about about the PET Lamp project. It’s an initiative that helps eliminate the abundance of plastic waste that contaminates the Colombian Amazon – and a perfect example of Colombian creativity and resourcefulness.__ __
