WOMEN FIRST
Part and parcel of attending public schools in the 1970s and ’80s in this country was being socially indoctrinated with viewings of “Free to Be You and Me.” Among the vignettes advocating an end to gender roles telling us who we could be, what we could do and how we could express our feelings was a cautionary tale called “Ladies First.” Spoiler alert: It didn’t end well for the individual demanding “ladies first.” Inspired by this feminist upbringing and resurgence of women’s activism in the wake of #MeToo, we are following up on an initiative and inviting the women of our congregation to give a Torah commentary or sermon once a month. We are calling it “Women First” as a tip of the hat to “Free to Be You and Me” because the ordinal number conveys it’s a top priority and because these talks will be given on the first Sabbath of the month. Eve Podet will provide Torah commentary on April 3. To view the complete list of scheduled speakers, click here.

After 35 years in operation, TAI Preschool is closing its doors at the end of this school year because of declining enrollment. When the preschool opened in 1985, it was a first for the local Jewish com- munity and quickly became one of the premier preschools in Lexington. Over the years, it has launched hundreds of Jewish and other children on their educational journeys, including somesecond

generation students.“
When my two children attended the preschool in the early 1990s, TAI had a much larger base of families with young children. There was even a waiting list to attend,”
said Mary
Engel, who has led the Preschool Committee for more than a decade.“
But as that base of young families has declined, so has our enrollment, especially of Jewish children. It’

My youngest, Tess, will be reading from Vayakhel when she is called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on March 21. I promise that she chose this parsha herself! It is a complete coincidence that it is also arguably the favorite of Temple boards everywhere. In what is perhaps the first capital building campaign, Moses instructs theIsraelites to
“
Take among you gifts to the LORD, everyone whose heart somoves,
”
to build the Tabernacle. This campaign is so successful that Moses calls it off, declaring,“
Let no man or
woman make further effort towards gifts for the sanctuary!”
As I write this column, Tess is planning a somewhat unconventional interpretation, calling into question whether the gifts of the Israelites wereas truly
“
from the heart
”
as they
appeared. I am proud of her, of course, for thinking for herself. I am also trying not to influence what she writes with my own thoughts:“
Don
’
t stop
believing in gifts of the heart!”
It has been the greatest privilege of my term as president to see the inner workings of the temple and how much of our congregational life depends on gifts of the heart. Especially astonishing are those gifts of time, attention or financial support that are unsolicited and most often unrecognized, given freely out of a desire to help an individual or the community. These gifts expand our opportunities to worship or learn; help us enjoy our physical world through food, beautiful spaces or comfortable surroundings; relieve suffering; or simply (as has often applied to me) lend a helping hand, letting us know that we are not alone. As Tess reads from the Torah and offers her interpretation of Vayakhel, I, of course, will be watching mostlywith a mother
’
s loving eyes. It will be impossible for me, though, not to experience our communal celebration as the product of your true gifts of the heart. I am grateful to all of you and the generations that came before for giving us Temple Adath Israel, the place where my children all came of age in a loving community. With appreciation,
Deb

Space for a preschool at TAI was included in the temple renovation and remodeling that was completed in 1984. According to Ben Baker, his late parents, Harold and Anita, provided additional funding for a preschool space after being inspired by what they saw while visiting a temple in Kansas City. Under the direction of Sally Kocen, the first students were enrolled for the 1985-
86 school
year. The school operated five mornings a week, serving children ages 2½ to 5. This year, the school was operating three mornings a week, serving chil- dren 18 months old to age 5.When Kocen

Our film series has featured movies by Jewish directors who fled Europe and landed in Hollywood between thetwo World Wars. We
’
ll continue in this vein with movies by four filmmakers comprising a great case study in this saga of exile and assimilation. Like so many young Jews from the German hinterlands and outposts of the Austrian Empire, five bright, brash, twenty

The fun begins with the first of two nights of Hadassah Shabbat. As always, the Friday evening service, at 7 p.m. March 6, will be here at Temple, followed by Saturday morning worship at OZS. Hadassah Shabbat is among our worship highlights of the year. It is a powerful reminder of our ability to come together across denominational lines and create something beautiful.Seeing the
brilliant
women of our
community lead us in every aspect of services is a celebration of progressive Judaism and inclusivity. When rituals that once were reserved only for men/ boys are led now by the women, we are reminded of how far we have come and how much further we have to go to reach comprehensive equality in the Jewish world. Another aspect of these services is the music. Many of us look forward all year to the choirs of both congregations singing together as one. As we commemorate the 100th
anniversary of the 19th
amendment,
which guaranteed women the right to vote, and recall biblical heroines like Vashti and Esther, the annual celebration of Hadassah Shabbat is a reminder that neither Judaism nor democracy can thrive without women having full rights of citizenship. The excitement continues Sunday, March 8, back here at Temple with achildren

s Megillah reading and Purim carnival. Religious school students are encouraged to come in costume. Please support the fun and games organized by our youth group in the social hall. Monday evening takes us back to OZS for a community Megillah reading with participants from both congregations. The reading will be preceded by a Hamantashen-

Debate filled with rhetoric and histrionics as to which holiday treat is more significant than its rival. Now, pay close attention, because unless you are a board member, Tuesday, March 10, is a night off. Use it well to recover from the past four days and to get ready for the fun the following night. Although approximately two-

s Jews were horrifically murdered, the memories of their communities live on in their Torah scrolls. These scrolls, which had been looted by the Nazis during the Shoah, have been preserved by Jewish congregations throughout the world. Today, Temple Adath Israel is continuing this vital project of memorial preservation with a communitywide effort to restore its memorial scroll from the Czech townof Turnov.
Jews had been a part of Turnov since at least the early 16th century. Yet it took the Nazis only a few years to destroy the community. In 1941 the Nazis stole the Torah scroll, the spiritual heart and soul of the community, and sent it to Prague, along with scrolls from countless other Czech towns and villages. Two yearslater, Turnov

The current Turnov synagogue dates to 1719; three previous buildings were destroyed by fire. The first written references to the town’s Jewish community date to 1527; more than 400 years later, in September 1941, services there were banned. After World War II, the few surviving Jews from Turnov tried to resume their lives there, but most of them emigrated, and Jewish life in Turnov ceased. From the 1950s to 2005, the synagogue was used as awarehouse, and many
building modifications were made. In 2005 the synagogue was purchased by the Town of Turnov. Reconstruction, at a cost of nearly $14 million CZK, was funded partlyby Norway.
