Founded by Doris Buffett, Letters Foundation was a foundation of last resort that provided humanitarian grants to people experiencing hardship when no other options existed. We collaborate with many individuals and families across the U.S. by supporting the incidentals necessary to get to work, retain work, or aspire for work. Access to transportation, clothing, equipment, and certification training programs, are examples of grants that have helped Continued UNDERSTANDING BARRIERS TO ACCESSING EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS Access to education for individuals and families is a top priority at Letters Foundation. Through our collaboration with the Red Sox Scholars Program, as well as our community partnerships with One Family, Inc. and Jeremiah Program, we remain committed to supporting educational goals for our constituents.. While we recognize that tuition, aid, and student loans are significant barriers for BUILDING LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS TO STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITY Collaboration between constituents, communities and funders is instrumental to our approach to grantmaking at Letters Foundation. As we look ahead to 2019, we are inspired by the courage, strength and resilience of every person who wrote to us this past year. We collaborate with many individuals and families across the U.S. by supporting the incidentals necessary to get to work, retain work, or aspire for work. In order to reach the people Doris Buffett has supported over the years, we launched the Foundation’s first strategic effort to build partnerships with community-based nonprofits in Greater Boston in March of 2017. LETTERS FOUNDATION
The Letters Foundation is a foundation of last resort that provides humanitarian grants to people experiencing a crisis through no fault of their own, when no other options exist. These one-time grants provide a hand-up to individuals as they work to stabilize theirlives.
WHAT TO EXPECT

You write us a letter. Please provide as much detail as possible about yourself, your household, your hardship, and your most pressing need (or request). If you include your email address, we'll send you an emailed notification once we receive your letter. We read it. Your letter will be assigned to one of our Letter Readers, who will carefully evaluate it and decide whether or not your request is eligible for further review. You will hear from us either way.2

We'll get back to you. If your request is approved for further review, we'll send you information on how to submit an application for a grant. Once you submit a completed application, you will work 1:1 with a Program Officer, who will review your case file, conduct interviews, and make a grant recommendation to the Committee on your behalf. SEND YOUR LETTER TO: The Letters Foundation only considers requests from individuals residing in the United States, either citizens or those with documented immigration status. Please kindly note that we do not accept letters written on behalf of someone else, with the exception of letters written on behalf of a family member or household member. EXCLUSIONS: The Foundation does not make grants for capital construction costs, endowments, medical or academic research, experimental medical treatments, scholarships, sectarian or religious purposes, general fundraising drives or events, loans of any type (personal or business), business startups, student loans/debt, tuition, or to support candidates for political office. The Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals from nonprofit institutions. While the Foundation does not pay tuition, some vocational training programs are considered.
