"Keep close to me, now. I'll be your guide..." In an attempt to make the Archive a little bit easier to navigate, I've been working on a contents page that contains all the links you'll need to investigate the blog. The default search facility here has always been a little bit unappealing, and so this lays everything out in a more linear fashion. It should, at least in theory anyway, make it easier for you to find stuff. So what is the Archive? It's everything that I have ferociously and often indiscriminately collected by Editors since I became a fan in 2006. There's no officially released material here as it's not my intention to take money out of anybody's pocket. What it does contain are live shows, interviews, television appearances and some other memorabilia that isn't quite as easy to categorise (Editors condom tin,
anyone?). The whole idea in setting this blog up was to assemble everything in one place so that Editors fans would be able to delve into the band's history, as well as catching up with their currentactivities.
I should point out that what you'll see is still incomplete, because I've had to start at the beginning and locate and replace any dead links as I go owing to some cyber-disasters.
Additionally, I recently decided to make as much as possible available in streaming form, so that fans aren't physically tied to downloading. At the time of writing there are well over 750 posts, so as you might imagine there's more than a few wayward pages. It's taken me just over a year so far but, in true existential fashion, I'm much nearer to the end than I was. Whether you've been an Editors fan for a while or you've only just discovered them, welcome. I'm glad you're here. Have a look around and take whatever you want, support the band and most importantly of allenjoy the music ;)

SUNDAY, 4 AUGUST 2019 EDITORS INSTAGRAM - JULY 2019 There isn't a huge amount of memorabilia this month, and nagging doubt has taken up residence in many fans' brains. Here's thehighlights.
Tom started off July in the right way by giving fans an impromptu acoustic take of Cold on Instagram . Then on the 2nd July the good folks at Hidden Jams found out more info on the two unreleased Editors tracks from the Jacknife Lee sessions, one of which appears to include Andy Burrows as an author. That makes him an Editor, which is kinda mind blowing. There really does seem to be a flexibility to the definition of who this band are now, but more on that later. There were 5 live shows this month including Down the Rabbit Hole on the 5th, Main Square on the 7th and Gurtenfestival on the 20th. The _VI OLENCE_ campaign officially came to a stop on the 22nd July in Bucharest at Rock the City, and fittingly the band were playing with The Cure. It was so good to see Rahi back onstage at _DTRH_ stalking the band with his camera again (that's his snapabove).
On the 19th there was a photo which suggested the band are working on promotional artwork, possibly with a view to it being included on the imminent greatest hits collection. Nadav Kanderand Hingston Studio
are involved, and from the photo shared we can see that all 5 Editors were present. Which brings up what is, for me anyway, the most important question relating to this band right now after "What's next?" and that is:-Where is Justin?
Before I go on I should preface this with the usual disclaimer; I don't know anybody in Editors and I have no access to insider information. I'm just a shady bootlegger with a fixation. Pleased to make your acquaintance ;) The usual question to ask once we ascertain that he's doing OK, of course, would be is Justin still a member of Editors? He's been away for quite some time, and although there was never an official announcement as to his whereabouts, as there was in the past, it was suggested by the band informally that he was on paternity leave. That was around the 24th April this year, and he never made it back to the stage for any of the summer shows. Actually, maybe "Is he still an Editor?" isn't even the right question to ask given how this band appears to be structured now. I think Editors has evolved into a very informal setup where people can come in and work under that identifier and then leave again, making the group seems to be more of a collective rather than a rigid format. If you think of U2, for example, you think Edge, Bono, Larry and Adam. Nobody else. That's the band. With Editors, it seems to be far more relaxed. If you're participating in either a recording or a live show, you're a member of the group. If you leave, then Editors will continue in your absence. No drama, no pressure. It's allowed for Justin, Tom and Elliott to have their own side projects, as well as leaving space to incorporate a world renowned photographer in Rahi and great musicians in Nic and if the info found by Hidden Jams was correct, Andy Burrows. Comparatively speaking, the same thing happened with The Cure, with Robert Smith being the principal song writer and only consistent figure for the 40 years they've been doing their thing. We're almost at that point now with Editors, as Russell and Tom are the only two musicians who have been there from the very beginning. That there's been no word from the label or Team Editors about his current status is congruent with the informality theory; he's just not around at the minute. The recent Tape Notes podcastthat
was released at the beginning of August raised my spirits slightly because I thought it was recorded recently. If that was true then any lingering doubts about Mr Lockey would at least be temporarily eased. Unfortunately it was put together during the rehearsals for the summer shows earlier this year which places it outside the time frame of hisdeparture.
It could very well be that Justin is in fact away being with his family, and that any other theories are way off base. But if it were true that he was no longer happy working as an Editor and has walked away to do other things , even temporarily, then that's totally fine. In truth my only concern in any of this, and I suspect it's the same for most of you, is simply that he's alright. It's not even primarily as an Editors fan, just as one human animal looking out for another. So as the month drew to a close and we waved goodbye to the _VI OLENCE_ promotional marathon, there was a horrible feeling of kenophobia that we're not used to. If you look back over each successive Editors album, there was always some sign that confirmed further adventures. Whether it was a new unreleased song being played live, or at least being hinted at in part,
or a definite statement of intent in interviews you always knew the train would keep rolling. Things were heading...somewhere. This may be the one time since Chris got fired that we can't be sure what's next, and it's scary.
In the absence of tangible evidence all we can do is speculate. We know about the two unreleased Jacknife Lee songs, the greatest hits at the end of the year but nothing more. There are no shows lined up and no evidence that there are new songs being recorded. Tom's recording the new S&B album over the summer, and it's unclear whether there will be a tour to go with that release when that happens. I would of course concede that Editors are very, very good at maintaining a poker face and keeping secrets (did you see _Frankenstein_ coming?), so there may be a lot we don't know. Fiendish hidden plans. But it's still a very unusual space that we occupy as fans right now. Enjoy the few photos and videos we have from July and ponder on what August might have in store ;) _ _ _Editors Instagram July 2019__download here

SATURDAY, 3 AUGUST 2019 TAPE NOTES EPISODE 24 - THE MAKING OF VI OLENCE 2019 "Do you have any of the Oxford demos?" Oh my goodness. We're barely into this show and with that single question and I already feel like I should step down and hand over the running of the Archive to John Kennedy. It would be in safe hands because he understands the psychology of music fanatics, which is why it's so great that he's the guiding hand of this fantastic little podcast called Tape Notes. If you enjoy geeking out over recording practices and understanding the assembly of your favourite records, then this is like having your birthday every day. The premise is simple but very, very interesting. You get members of the group, the producer they worked with on an album and then encourage them to take you through how they ended up with the final product. It's an aural autopsy, with those taking part bringing some demos or stems from recording sessions and laying it all out in front of the listener to let them see the how it all works. It's the kind of question and answers that you long for during the promotional campaign, but due to the compact and surface level nature of those encounters, you never quite arrive at a satisfying destination. This episode is all about explaining how _VI OLENCE _was conceived. It's been done as part of Mr Kennedy's Radio X show before, but this media format has allowed for more in depth discussion. John Kennedy has previously done some great album walkthroughs by Editors, and comparatively he is the equivalent of the best MMA referees. When you're watching a fight, you can tell how good the official in the cage is by how little you're aware of their presence. In this podcast John Kennedy understands the benefits of allowing the participants to speak with minimal intrusion. He's reserved in his interventions, but possesses a collection of insightful questions to keep the flow going when he does. I should point out that in order to avoid the copyright bans that accompany this being posted on YouTube (I was hit twice with worldwide blocks when I initially uploaded it), I removed as much of the officially released stuff as possible. It was done with care, love and total respect to the original material. My motivation here is only to preserve and share. If you visit the Tape Notes website, and I strongly suggest you do, you'll find that a participant in a different episiode of the podcast is Jim Abbiss. Who is that? The gentleman who produced the _BackRoom._
This is the first time hearing from Leo Abrahams and his approach to the construction of _VI OLENCE_, and_ _I loved discovering that he watched old live footage of the band with a view to capturing that spirit in a studio setting. People who've been on this journey with the band for a long time will acknowledge that the one thing that is their curse as well as their strength, is that the live sound is usually more powerful and effective than the studio sessions. Hearing that Leo had a handle on that shows how perfect he was as a choice for producer. He gets it. I mean this without any slight on Mr Smith but I also love that the less obvious road is being taken with Justin and Elliott taking us through all of this, rather than doing a re-recording with Tom. It's a signal of how much Editors have evolved. They are no longer "the new guys" (thank goodness!), and are instead able to carry an hour and a half of conversation about Editors' music and keep you totally engagedthroughout.
Ironically, I could spend paragraph after paragraph dissecting the podcast, and I did have to cut out an awful lot before I posted this, because there are so many interesting details and ideas at work here. But as always, it would be better if you heard it all from those involved. Great job Mr Kennedy, enjoy the chatter ;)_stream it here_

SATURDAY, 27 JULY 2019 RUSSELL INTERVIEWED BY ANNA WIRZ FOR THE ENGLISH SHOW 20TH JULY 2019 Thanks to my one of my co-pilot's, Hannah for finding this. I've grabbed it and put it in the Archive for the hardcores, and for future fans that probably don't even know they love the band yet. How's that forforward planning?
On the evening of their show at Gurtenfestival, 20th July 2019 Anna Wirz managed to secure some time with the man on the bass, Mr Russell Leetch. You can tell from the way the questions are asked here that Anna is a fan of this band, particularly the one about _Barricades_. The opening question of how the band settled on their name was some very clever misdirection on her part, as it seemed initially to be heading down the same alleyways that interviewers always seem to choose. Why did you call the album _Violence_? Where is Chris? Have you ever heard Joy Division etc. Not so. Anna goes deep. Russell confirms what we already knew ans that is there are some end of the year announcements coming, more than likely regarding those two unheard tracks from the Jacknife Lee sessions. Also, and if you're really attentive, you'll have noticed a possible verbal tell when discussing upcoming shows. _"This is out last weekend so we've got one more show supporting The Cure in Bucharest and then that's done for a little while, so it'll be a little time before we do another show."_ Fans of language and sentence construction will notice that there is no finality here. He doesn't say that they're supporting The Cure and then that's it, which would have only added to the fan anxiety surrounding their ongoing plans. He says they'll be done for a _little while_, that it will be a _little time_ before they play again. It's both comforting and frustrating, because it sounds like there's more to come but all we really want to know is what's next? Well done Anna, this is an interesting encounter to listen to. If you'd like to hear the full show that this was a part of, click here. Enjoy ;)

SUNDAY, 21 JULY 2019 GURTEN FESTIVAL 20TH JULY 2019 (AUDIO) **UPDATED 12th August 2019 - Added the SRF 3 Highlights video** Here's the full audio of last night's show at Gurtenfestival courtesy of long time friend to the Archive, HomeatBerlin. Many thanks to youfor sharing ;)
The stream for the gig was geo-blocked, which at this time in human history where the internet is actually bringing people of different cultures together, seems to be a little regressive. I confess that my knowledge of music rights is still at a developmental stage (just ask Merlin), but it is so frustrating to know that something like this is happening and you're excluded from the event because of where youlive.
Using proxies to view and grab the live broadcast meant that the stream was a little bit laggy. The audio drifted hopelessly out of sync at so many points that it became impossible to fix, and so I had to abandon it. I'm not giving up on it completely, just setting it to one side so I can get the material out there in audio form. I'd also add that it pains me not to have the video because I feel like I've not only done the fans a disservice, but also the band. Hi everybody, I'm Airborne Lemming. I take this bootlegging life very, veryseriously...
I should point out that I uploaded the recording to YouTube first so you could stream it and, as if by magic, it was instantly blocked worldwide. So instead we're going Old Skool on this and doing the whole thing as downloadable MP3s. This is almost the last chance to dance to the _VI OLENCE_ campaign, with it being the penultimate date at the end of a very long and winding promotional road. For the first time, I feel like two things happened. This recording allowed us to appreciate more of the musical intricacies of _Frankenstein_, but I feel like the first thing that we heard was the band coming to terms with what they've got here and embracing it fully. Even from the earliest live renditions, and over a fairly short space of time you can hear the change in confidence. _Frankenstein_ has grown (and shrunk slightly, but more of that in a bit) to be something they initially introduced with a "erm...we've got this new thing for you all to try" attitude, to a more "we made you wait, and now it's here!" approach. It's summed up perfectly when Tom says "OK" just before the run up to the second chorus, like he's aware he's setting something up. And of course he is. There's more crowd baiting in the same style as _Papillon_, and they've trimmed the ending down to ensure that it's a sleeker beast than ever before. That couple with the second factor, some real crowd participation when they play it, means that as strange as this sounds _Frankenstein_ feels like it's finally become an Editors song. Enjoythe music ;)

_SRF 3 Highlights Video_ Thank you, Hannah. You're the best ;) Here's a 30 minute highlight video that was broadcast on SRF 3, coming to us from the Lady of the Boards , and shows Editors doing their thing at Gurtenfestival, 20th July 2019. "Great!", you might be thinking. That means we'll get to see them doing _Frankenstein_again.
Nope.
For some illogical reason the people that assembled this all-too-brief footage decided that they'd be better off playing it horribly safe, leaning more towards the singles. _No Barricades_, no _Frankenstein_. I'm not putting the music down that was selected, there's just a sense that those with the power to air these things weren't as in touch with this band as the rest of us. But then again, who really is? Most sane people listen to music as they go about their lives. For some of us, the music _is_ our lives, consumed as we are. That's not to say in any way that this is a bad show, far from it. For those of us that were geoblocked out of this party it's a fitting substitute, and a fine addition to the full audio that we already have. There's lots to like. If you were down the front and nestling behind the barrier, there's a high probablility that we saw you during this. Just to make sure that the evening doesn't qualify as a Sunday School class, Tom goes out of his way to swear during _Magazine _in a spot I don't think I've ever heard him curse. Plus, as I've said before, I'm glad that Nic Willes is getting more screen time because in this light and on this evening at Gurtenfestival, he was an Editor and that should be celebrated as such. Oh, and just in case it's been forgotten, we still miss you Justin. Hope you're well. Enjoy the music, and remember to thank and curse SRF 3 in equal measures while you do it._Broadcast Setlist_

SUNDAY, 14 JULY 2019 COLD LIVE AT HOME FESTIVAL 12TH JULY 2019 (IPK RECORDING) From her usual position at the front of the crowd, this is Mari's recording of _Cold_ being played acoustically at Home Festival in Venice, 12th July 2019. It begins as quietly as you would expect it to, given that it's just a singer and a guitar but once Elliott gets involved you can see an immediate increase in intensity. In the past Editors have used multiple instruments and layering of sound to build tension and drama, in songs like _Camera_ or _Ocean of Night_ for example. Here, they're able to do it with two instruments, two vocalist and a large unpaid but hyper-enthusiastic set of backingsingers.
The Italians always show up for Editors, and they're usually in fine voice. There was no deviation from the norm here, with the audience participating fully in the chorus as they're baited by Mr Williams. Sad to think that there are only 2 dates left to be played after this and then... who knows? There's a celebratory atmosphere to this because this really does feel like the natural end of the _VI OLENCE_ campaign. What a trip it's been. Enjoy ;) _Visit the Italian Pop Kids _ brought to you with lots and lots of lemming-love :) x Posted by drew lemmingat 03:43

MAIN SQUARE FESTIVAL 7TH JULY 2019 **UPDATE 8th July 2019 - Culture Box have uploaded their own version of the show on their YouTube profile and it easlily beats any that were available prior to that in terms of its picture quality. The original stream last night really wasn't that great, but this is much clearer. I'm not so utterly attached to my own ego that I can't cede to a better source when it's out there, on the contrary I'm thrilled about it! Unfortunately, I still won't be able to archive it over at YouTube (thanks again Merlin), but you should definitley check out Culture Box's footage using the link included here. This is a slightly shorter setlist than the previous one at Down theRabbit Hole
,
as Editors were only given an hour to do their thing. Sometimes though, that's all the time you need. It is my assertion that some of the folks that doubted if _Barricades_ had the power to affect, or believed that _Frankenstein_ was a terrible choice of musical direction may have had cause to reconsider during the last few shows. It's why you should always treat any studio material by the band as a source of guidance for what you'll experience when you see them live. The two entities are not the same, and I think with only an hour of time at Main Square they reiterated that point again. Before I go, and for the record, Justin is still missed. I say that with the utmost respect for Nic who I think is an amazing musician, and whom I love seeing play. I just wanted to reaffirm that Mr Lockey hasn't been forgotten. I hope you're doing OK, Sir.Enjoy the music ;)

It would be an
understatement to say that I'm a really big fan of the band Editors. Psychologists would probably tell you that it borders on obsession, and they'd be right. As such, I have collected a small mountain of various media connected to the band, and I want to make it all available for other folks to enjoy. When the band released the "Unedited" boxset in 2011, I had the idea to put this little part of cyberspace together to share all the live shows, interviews and other wonderful weirdness connected with the band that I have collected as a fan. A sort of illicit younger brother to the Unedited box. I hope that the blog can be a place where old fans and new fans alike can indulge their Editors curiosity/addiction and find out more about the group. There will be no officially released material shared here, just bootlegs and oddities. For Russell, Tom, Chris, Ed, Justin, Elliott and their insanely (and often insane) devoted fanbase. :) View my complete profile Simple theme. Powered by Blogger .Details
