STATE OF THE LAKE
The LCBP publishes the State of the Lake Report every several years to inform citizens and resource managers about the health of the Lake. The report was first published in 1998 and then in 2005, 2008, 2012, 2015 and 2018. The LCBP works with its many partners to prepare the reports, which are based on the most current scientific data and resource management approaches. Fish Consumption Advisories. As a result of high concentrations of mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) found in the Lake sediments and in plant and animal life, New York, Vermont, and Québec have issued fish consumption advisories for certain Lake Champlain fish, including lake trout, Atlantic salmon, and walleye. DRINKING WATER
Vermont has 73 water supply systems, New York 26, and Quebec has one. The City of Burlington, VT and the Champlain Water District, which serve many cities and towns within Chittenden County, VT, are among the largest water suppliers in the Basin.Most of the Plattsburgh area uses ground water and a reservoir outside the City for drinking water (the Clinton County database of Public Water Supply LAKE AND WATERSHED DATA Lake & Watershed Data Sources. Every year, more data about Lake Champlain and its watershed is posted online. Lake Bottom Data. Data collected in the last decade have provided a greater understanding of the bottom of Lake Champlain. Two highly detailed data sets have been developed using sonar systems by faculty in the geology department at Middlebury College. Opportunities for Action (OFA) is a plan for managing the Lake Champlain watershed. It is a strategic planning tool used to coordinate the efforts of a diverse group of stakeholders as represented on the Lake Champlain Steering Committee.
