FIFTYNORTH OFFERING A NUMBER OF SERVICES AMID PANDEMIC; RICE COUNTY AUTHORITIES STILL STILL SEEKING PIPE BOMB INFORMATION; NORTHFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IS GIVING A CAR AWAYNovember 23, 2020
By Rich Larson, News Director FiftyNorth is among the many facilities affected by the new restrictions that went into effect over the weekend. Craig Swenson of FiftyNorth said that while they were surprised that the governor would include a fitness center like theirs in his restrictions, it is probably for the best, because the top priority is keeping everybody safe. But Swenson was quick to say that even though the building is closed, they are still offering several programs and services. In fact, he said, by the end of this week, they expect to offer upwards of 40 different fitness classes online, as well as art classes and the lifelong learning classes the center has always offered. By Rich Larson, News Director Rice County authorities are asking for help in finding the person or persons who may have left an explosive device on the side of a Northfield Township road yesterday. According to Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn, a passer-by noticed the device in the ditch on the side of Hall Avenue in between Sumac Lane and Huron Court, and contacted the authorities. The Sheriff’s Department and Northfield Police responded, located the device and concluded that it was consistent to a pipe bomb. The area was secured, and the St. Paul bomb squad was called in. Squad personnel confirmed that the device did indeed contain explosive material, and the device was then rendered safe. Anyone with information about this incident or the device, or anyone who may have seen anything in the area recently is asked to contact the Rice County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Unit at 507-334-4391 or the Northfield Police Department at 507-645- 4475 (more…) NORTHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RETURN TO DISTANCE LEARNING TODAY, ALL OTHER STUDENTS ON MONDAY; CITY COUNCIL ADOPTS LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSTATEMENT
November 19, 2020
By Rich Larson, News DirectorDr. Matt Hillmann
Northfield High School students returned to distance learning today. Due to the sudden and rapid increases in Rice County in recent weeks, the school district, in conversation with both the Rice County and the State of Minnesota Health departments made the decision last week that the High School would move to distance learning today. The original plan had the middle school elementary and early learning students moving to distance learning on November 30. However, because the number of positive cases in Rice County is rising so quickly, that plan was accelerated and now those students will begin distancelearning on Monday.
Northfield Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Hillmann said the district is much better prepared for this today than it was last spring, when the schools were forced into, as Hillmann put it, emergency distance learning. Since the end of the school year last May, district employees and faculty have been planning for this scenario almost as an inevitability. Still Hillmann said, while the district is in a good position for this, they are not in what he would call an “excellent” one: _“THERE WILL BE THINGS THAT PEOPLE SAY THAT’S MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT YOU DID LAST SPRING, AND I’M SURE THERE WILL BE SOME THINGS WHERE THEY SAY ‘WOW, I KNOW YOU TRIED TO MAKE THAT BETTER, BUT YOU STILL HAVE SOME IMPROVEMENT TO GO THERE.’ AND THAT IS WHERE WE WILL BE. WE WILL CONTINUE TO TRY TO IMPROVE THIS MODEL THROUGHOUT.”_(more…)
NORTHFIELD CITY COUNCIL APPROVES FRANCHISE FEES, ONE MORE VOTE REQUIRED; RIVERFRONT ENHANCEMENT PLAN CONSIDERED; REBOUND HOSPITALITY ISSUES ARCHER HOUSE STATEMENTNovember 18, 2020
By Rich Larson, News Director After months of conversation and studies, the Northfield City Council voted unanimously last night in favor of two Councilor David Delong ordinances, one that would place a franchise fee on gas service in Northfield, and the other on electric service. The fees would raise approximately $1.3 million dollars annually, $1.2 million of which would fund road construction and redevelopment, supplanting the city’s current assessment program. An additional $100,000 would go to fund the city’s Climate Action Plan. Last week, the council passed the first reading of the two ordinances by a 4-3 margin. The dissenting opinions for at least two of the councilors had been due to the lack of regulation surrounding the funding of the climate plan. In explaining her “No” vote, Mayor Pownell expressed concern that the ordinances, as written, would allow for future councils to divert all the money to the climate funding. Councilor Brad Ness proposed an amendment to both ordinances during the meeting, capping the amount of ordinance funds that could be allocated to the Climate Action Plan at $100,000. This was enough for Pownell to change her vote: (more…) NORTHFIELD HOSPITAL CLOSED TO VISITORS; CITY COUNCIL MEETS TONIGHT; ST. OLAF CUP HEARING ON THURSDAYNovember 17, 2020
