SARDAR JOKES
Sikhs, or Sardarjis as we are called in India, are a well respected community in India. They are by and large well assimilated into the Indian society. Infact, the word ‘assimilated’ is a understatement; Sikhs ARE the Indian society itself. But sadly in their beloved country, India, Sikhs have to bear the brunt of jokes almost everyday in their lives, the so called Sardar jokes; jokes that are seen as harmless fun and are generally seen to fall out of the ambit of ‘racism’. Although jokes about several ethnic stereotypes are common in India, the Sardarji jokes are one of the most popular and widely circulatedethnic jokes in
India. The usual presumption is that such jokes don’t harm anyone and are a reflection of the tolerance and vibrance of Indian culture. Sardarji jokes are however generally considered tasteless and inappropriate by members of the Sikh community. When an attempt is made by a Sikh to correct things in a circle of friends, the response fall under categories as mentioned below. * POINT AGREED AND NOTED – The first step is taken if we STOP forwarding and reciting such jokes. Charity begins at home, righto? Wethank you guys.
* SIKHS THAT OPPOSE SUCH JOKES ARE NOT SPORTING ENOUGH – The problem which earlier was restricted to gatherings has increased manifold due to the chain SMS’s, whatsapp, FB, emails, internet sites etc. People compare the Sikh joke problem, to those on Malyalis, Bengalis, etc. But it is not the same. Each Indian mobile is getting hundreds of Sardar jokes against a small percentage on the other communities. The ratio is too skewed against the Sikhs?. SIkhs could have been sporting if they listened to such jokes once in a while; but what do you expect Sikhs to do if they get such jokes on our mobile in the midst of their prayers, in the middle of the night, early in the morning. Moreover, an issue that needs highlighting is the impact of Sardar jokes on Sikh children, especially those that happen to live outside the Punjab. * AAPKE BARAH BAJE HUE HAIN – There’s a seperate post on this topic, where the history of the _‘Barah Baje Hue Hain’_ remark isexplained
Having been at the receiving end of such jokes all our lives, we are left with two alternative ways to deal with the problem * ALTERNATIVE – I – _The conventional wisdom – Ignore them_: But in ignoring them we must let Sikh children be the target of jokes and let them cry. Everybody can have their fun and give a damn to the souls of our children!!. Also, we can then watch Sikh children grow and go on fighting back in the same language as they grow up. So, then we can also teach our children to fight back instantly rather than patiently argue. * ALTERNATIVE – II – _The radically stupid view – Try to change the worldview: _Sardarji jokes are nothing but ‘racism’, an attack that we Sikhs face with a heavy heart everyday. This website is an attempt to tell our side of the story, for those who have the intellect and the sensitivity to understand.
