WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO WITH YOUR EXTRA DAY? -------------------------by Ashlee Lavatai
Saturday, February 29th 2020AA Leap Day February 29, 2020 (Photo credit MGN online) (KUTV) — Happy Leap Day! That's right today February 29, 2020 marks a Leap Day, an occasion that happens every four years. The extra day is due to scientific facts in order to solve the difference between the solar year and the Gregorian calendar. It takes approximately 365.25 days for the Earth to orbit around the sun. Every four years those quarter days are combined and added to the calendar, thus we have Leap Year to catch up. Those also born on Leap Day only celebrate their "true birthday" every four years, Happy Birthday Leaplings! If you're turning 40 today, technically you're 10-years-old. Statistics have stated that you have a 1 in 1,461 chance of being born on a Leap Day. Some famous celebrities born on Leap Day include rap star, Ja Rule, actor, Alex Rocco, and television host, Dinah Shore. There are also some Leap Day traditions like in Ireland when a Leap Day is the only day it's acceptable for a woman to propose to a man. An Irish legend where St. Brigid struck a deal with St. Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years. Some places Leap Day is known as "Bachelor's Day" where if a man declines a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day they would have to pay a penalty, such as 12 pairs of gloves, this way the women can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. The question we all need to ask ourselves is how are we going to celebrate this extra day? Some local companies have some deals to helpus in this dilemma.
