HOW TO RESET ESXI PASSWORD We DO KNOW IF WE FORGOT THE PASSWORD OF ESX SERVER. BUT WHAT IF WE FORGOT THE PASSWORD FOR ESXI SERVERS WHICH DONT HAVE THE SERVICECONSOLE.
RECENTLY WE FACED THE SAME ISSUE IN OUR ENVIRONMENT AND BELOW ARE THE STEPS NEED TO BE DONE TO RESET THE ESXI PASSWORD: THROUGH VCENTER SERVER IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO ACCESS THE LOCAL ACCOUNTS OF THE ESXI SERVER TO RESET THE ROOT PASSWORD. TRIED TO CONNECT THE STANDALONE ESXI BUT NO LUCK. THE ONLY OPTION AVAILABLE IS TO RESET THE PASSWORD BY USING LIVE CD. BELOW ARE THE STEPS TO RESET THE PASSWORD FOR ROOT ACCOUNT. PLEASE REVIEW THE SAME AND SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS. 1) AS THE ESXI VERSION IS NOT HAVING SINGLE USER MODE, WE HAVE TO BOOT THE SERVER THROUGH ANY OTHER LINUX LIVE CD. 2) AFTER BOOTING THROUGH THE CD, WE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE ESXI PARTITIONS. HAVE TO MOUNT THE ESXI PARTITIONS AND TO SEARCH FOR THE STATE.TGZ WHICH CONTAINS LOCAL.TGZ. 3) NEED TO EXTRACT THE STATE.TGZ AND LOCAL.TGZ FILES , THEN WE WILL GET THE ETC FOLDER WHICH CONTAINS ALL THE CONFIGURATIONFILES.
4) IN ETC , SEARCH FOR THE CONFIGURATION FILE NAMED SHADOW, WHICH CONTAINS ALL THE USER ACCOUNT PASSWORDS IN CIPHER TEXT. BY DELETING THE CIPHER TEXT FOR ROOT USER ACCOUNT WILL MAKE THE ROOTPASSWORD AS BLANK.
5) THEN AGAIN WE NEED TO ZIP THE EXTRACTED FILES INCLUDING THE SHADOW AND NEED TO UNMOUNT THE ESXI PARTITIONS. 6) REBOOT THE ESXI, THEN AFTER BOOTING WE CAN LOGIN WITHOUT ANY PASSWORD FOR ROOT ACCOUNT. BELOW ARE THE COMMANDS TO RESET THE ROOT PASSWORD: ONCE BOOTED THROUGH LIVE CD, OPEN A SHELL. RUN THE FOLLOWING SET OF COMMANDS: TO SEE PARTITIONS OF ESXI# FDISK –L
CREATING DIRECTORY TO MOUNT THE ESXI PARTITIONS# MKDIR /MNT/DISK
MOUNTING THE PARTITIONS # MOUNT /DEV/SDA* /MNT/DISKCHANGING DIRECTORY
# CD /MNT/DISK
LISTING ALL FILE INCLUDING HIDDEN# LS –AL
TAKING BACKUP OF STATE.TGZ FILE # CP STATE.TGZ STATE.TGZ.BAK CREATING AND BROWSING TO TEMP DIRECTORY# CD /RAMDISK
# MKDIR TEMP
# CD TEMP
EXTRACTING THE ZIP AND TAR FORMAT # TAR ZXF /MNT/DISK/STATE.TGZ# LS -AL
# TAR ZXF LOCAL.TGZ
# CD ETC
EDITING THE SHADOW FILE TO CLEAR THE CONTENTS# NANO SHADOW
BLANK OUT THE ENCRYPTED PASSWORD. FOR EXAMPLE CHANGE ROOT:$1$YWXTUQVN$9E1IXJGVD45T5IAGRXAUV.:13358:0:99999:7::: TO ROOT::13358:0:99999:7::: PREVIOUSLY , TESTED THE SAME IN MY LAB ENVIRONMENT AND IT WORKED FORME.

HOW TO GENERATE MEMORY DUMP FILE FROM WINDOWS VM USINGSNAPSHOT FEATURE
IN GENERAL WE USE THIS PROCESS WHEN VM IS HAVING PERFORMANCE ISSUES AND NOT ABLE TO TRACE THE EXACT SOURCE. WE ALREADY CHECKED THE BELOW BASIC THINGS BEFORE GOING FOR VM SNAPSHOT. We have disabled TCP Chimney , Page file size maximized. Still High CPU is visible in the Kernel mode as well using taskmgr. Looking from Process Explorer we see the srv.sys has 5-6 threads that contribute to approximately 15 -20 % of the cpu. VMSS2CORE.EXE UTILITY CAN TRANSFORM A SNAPSHOT INTO A MEMORY DUMP. THIS TOOL CAN BE FOUND IN THE VMWARE WORKSTATION PACKAGE STARTING WITH 7.0. NO RECONFIGURATION OR REBOOTS ARE REQUIRED OF THE GUEST WINDOWS OS. TO GET THIS DUMP PLEASE TAKE THE FOLLOWING STEPS: 1. ENSURE THE SYSTEM IS IN THE PROBLEM STATE. 2. CREATE A SNAPSHOT OR SUSPEND THE VIRTUAL MACHINE. 3. LOCATE THE SNAPSHOT (.VMSN) OR SUSPEND FILE (.VMSS) IN THE VIRTUAL MACHINE DIRECTORY. YOU CAN ALSO USE A MONOLITHIC OR NON‐ MONOLITHIC MEMORY (.VMEM) FILE. 4. RUN THE VMSS2CORE TOOL WITH OPTIONS SELECTING YOUR PREFERRED OUTPUT TYPE. RUN THIS COMMAND TO GENERATE A MEMORY.DMP FILE : VMSS2CORE -WREFERENCES:

* LOCATE THE VIRTUAL MACHINE IN THE INVENTORY. * POWER OFF THE VIRTUAL MACHINE. * RIGHT-CLICK THE VIRTUAL MACHINE AND CLICK EDIT SETTINGS. * CLICK THE OPTIONS TAB. * SELECT THE ADVANCED: GENERAL SECTION. * Click the Configuration Parameters button. Note: The Configuration Parameters button is disabled when the virtual machine is powered on. * FROM THE CONFIGURATION PARAMETERS WINDOW, CLICK ADD ROW. * In the Name field, enter the parameter name: fsr.maxSwitchoverSeconds * IN THE VALUE FIELD, ENTER THE NEW TIMEOUT VALUE IN SECONDS (FOREXAMPLE: 500).
* CLICK THE OK BUTTONS TWICE TO SAVE THE CONFIGURATION CHANGE. * POWER ON THE VIRTUAL MACHINE. NOW TEST THE SVMOTION WHICH WILL COMPLETE WITHOUT ANY ISSUES . Posted by kumarvsphere| July
