'IT AIN'T NO SLOUCH LEAGUE': DRAGONS TEST FAVORED DEFENDERS IN XFLSEASON OPENER

The D.C. Defenders, right, line up against the Seattle Dragons for the opening kickoff of the opening football game of the XFL season, Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, in Washington, DC. (AP Photo/Stephen Whyno) WASHINGTON D.C. — While the latest iteration of spring football is still in its infancy Seattle Dragons running back Trey Williams just wants the world to know one thing -- for the record. "It's XFL football, man," Williams said after juking a defender and scoring a 13-yard reception touchdown late in the first half to give the Dragons another lead. "It ain't no slouch league. There's a bunchof dogs out here."
The underdog Seattle Dragons entered Saturday morning's XFL season opener as massive 9.5 point underdogs according to Vegas oddsmakers. And for good reason. RELATED STORY: Seattle Dragons enter 2020 XFL season as heavy underdogs, oddsmakers say The DC Defenders featured a high-octane offense with speedy playmakers on the perimeter, the NCAA's all-time leading rusher and, not to mention, one of the league's stars, Cardale Jones, headlining as the the team's signal caller. This video file cannot be played.(Error Code: 102630) KOMO This was supposed to be a nice and tidy rout for the Defenders and a chance for Jones to showcase the skills that captivated the country in 2014 when he led the Ohio State Buckeyes to a National Championship. Instead, the Defenders needed a pair special teams gaffes Saturday to claim a 31-19 victory in front of 17,163 fans at Audi Field. Don't underestimate the dogs on the Dragons. RELATED STORY: SEATTLE DRAGONS 2020 XFL SEASON PREVIEW: RULES, TEAMS AND ROSTER BREAKDOWN The high-octane Defenders offense were held to just two field goals in the first half. Two trips to the red zone resulted in three points, so head coach Pep Hamilton opened the second half dialing up a play engineered to give the Defenders some life. A timely double-reverse play resulted in a 36-yard touchdown for Khari Lee, selling the play just enough by pretending to be a blocker, and seemed to be the decisive moment for the Defenders. Nope. The dogs from Seattle had another idea. Less than one minute later Dragons quarterback Brandon Silvers escaped pressure and found Austin Proehl, who scored the XFL's first-ever touchdown in the first half, in open space. Proehl made a defender miss and bee-lined for the end zone for 57 yards to tie the game at19.
Proehl's second score -- he finished with a game-best 88 receiving yards -- turned out to be the Dragons' last touchdown of the game. A pair of special teams gaffes kept the Defenders in the game despite its offense sputtering in the red zone. Defenders cornerback Elijah Campbell squeaked by blockers in the second half to block a punt, resulting in a touchdown for the Defenders. At the end of the end first half an errant kickoff gifted the Defenders with prime possession. In all, the two errors amounted to nine points for the favored Defenders. That may not seem like much but the Dragons were already dealing with razor thin margins to begin with. They simply could not sustain self-inflicted wounds and shock the XFL landscape. DC improved to 1-0 behind 291 yards and touchdowns from Jones, who delivered a strike for a pivotal 31-yard touchdown on fourth down late in the third quarter. Silvers and the Dragons worked to climb back in the game in the fourth quarter, but the intended receiver lost his footing and the Troy standout threw the ball to the waiting hands of Defenders cornerback Bradley Sylve, who returned it 69 yards for a touchdown to extend the Defenders lead to 31-19. A last-ditch effort for the Dragons failed when running back Ja'Quan Gardner fumbled deep in the red zone. Seattle was just four yards away from potentially making it a three-point game with enough time foranother possession.
Instead the Dragons will enter its home opener Feb. 15 against the Tampa Bay Vipers with a 0-1 record and one important message for the rest of the newly minted football league. It ain't no slouch league, after all.XFL STANDINGS
