Over the years, Kirkland Museum’s Founding Director & Curator Hugh Grant has amassed a stunning collection of chairs BOCCA SOFA BY STUDIO65 Studio65 was formed in Turin, Italy in 1965 by a group of architects and artists, proponents of the avant garde in Italian design of the late 1960s. This eye-catching sofa is Studio65’s best known design and gained its inspiration from Salvador Dalí’s 1934–1935 painting, Mae West’s Face which May be Used as a Surrealist Apartment.To realize their design, they went to Gufram, an EMBRYO CHAIR BY MARC NEWSON Marc Newson’s narrow-waisted Embryo Chair is an example of the designer’s minimalist, biomorphic aesthetic. The chair’s name and undulating organic design both suggest inspiration from microbiology. Though designing in the Postmodern era, Newson was inspired by simpler designs from the 1950s and 1960s, which he modernized with the use of new materials, like this chair’s neoprene SIÈGE À DOSSIER BASCULANT (NO. B301) This adjustable-back armchair made of metal tubing and leather upholstery resembles the tubular steel Wassily Chair designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925 (also represented in Kirkland Museum’s collection).
