Check out our sister site KRL News & Reviews for even more articles every week. ------------------------- ← Previous Entries ------------------------- LOCAL ARTISTS DURING SHELTER-IN-PLACE FROM THE May 18 ISSUE IN THE Arts & EntertainmentSECTION
_BY LORIE LEWIS HAM_ Recently KRL checked in with several local theatre companies to see how shelter-in-place was affecting them and what people could do to help. This week we checked in with several local artists that KRL has featured in the past to see how they are doing. While this is only a small handful of the many artists in the area, I am sure if your favorite artist isn’t listed they would be happy to have you reach out to them on social media. JACKIE DALE: THECATMOTHER/CAT TRAPPER BEE INVASION AND KITTENS GALORE FROM THE May 16 ISSUE IN THE Animal Rescue AdventuresSECTION
_BY JACKIE DALE_
The past month has been interesting to say the least. I live in the country surrounded by orange trees, and every year the trees bloom for about a three-week period. During this time bee keepers bring their hives in so their bees can make the oh-so-luscious orange blossom honey. There are literally hundreds of hives in a one-mile radius of my home. Every year a bee keeper from Sacramento rents a piece of my land for his hives for which I receive a bit of cash and a gallon ofhoney.

We’ve been sheltering in place in California for more than fifty days now, and the uncertainty ahead is heavy to carry and more than most can handle. _MURDER AT THE TAFFY SHOP_ BY MADDIE DAY: REVIEW/GIVEAWAY FROM THE May 16 ISSUEIN THE Cynthia Chow
SECTION
_BY CYNTHIA CHOW_
Anyone who hates a puppy is just setting herself up for murder. Not that Beverly Ruchart deserves to die for accusing the adorable rescue dog Tucker for digging up her garden, but MacKenzie “Mac” Almeida has proof that her niece’s puppy is innocent. Using her minister father and astrologist mother as role models, Mac attempts to be amenable, but Mrs. Ruchart is just as rude and demanding as a customer at Mac’s Bikes rental and repair shop in their town of Westham, Cape Cod. So when Mac’s friend Gin Malloy finds Mrs. Ruchart dead at Gin’s Salty Taffy shop, Mac knows that there will be a bounty of suspects to investigate in order to help prove her friend’sinnocence.
_MOUSSE AND MURDER_: ALASKAN DINER MYSTERY BY ELIZABETH LOGAN: REVIEW/GIVEAWAY/GUEST POST FROM THE May 16 ISSUEIN THE Food Fun
SECTION
_BY SANDRA MURPHY & ELIZABETH LOGAN_ In Elkview, Alaska, Charlotte “Charlie” Cooke has taken over the Bear Claw Diner, formerly run by her mom. Mom and Dad are on a European cruise while Charlie keeps the 24-hour diner going, serving delicious food. She hasn’t made many suggestions, especially to the food. Chef Oliver is opposed to the smallest change, unless it’s his idea. Adding chocolate to bear claws? A travesty! REEDLEY HIGH AT HOME FROM THE May 16 ISSUEIN THE Education
SECTION
_BY ASAMI NELSON_
Although Reedley High made the difficult decision to close campus for the rest of the school year amid concerns about student and public health, teachers and staff are still working to continue providing students with quality education. Classes have shifted from the classroom to computers and phones with the use of a variety of apps. Google Classroom provides students with a way to virtually access assignments, notes, and ensure that they are completing tasks. SECTION
_BY KATHLEEN COSTA_
Mabel Skinner has inherited her Aunt Peggy’s garlic farm appropriately, but oddly, christened “Stinkin’ Stuff Farm.” She knows how to code and create apps, a solitary career that fits her personality, however, it is in stark contrast to her Aunt Peggy’s community involvement and plethora of friends in the small Massachusetts town of West Slocum. THREE ROMANTIC MYSTERIES: BECAUSE WHY NOT? FROM THE May 16 ISSUE IN THE Mysteryrat's MazeSECTION
_BY SHARON TUCKER_
Comfort reads are always a necessity, and mine currently are romantic thrillers I read or meant to read some time ago (with the occasional sci-fi or fantasy novel thrown in for variety) and I do find them all most comforting. The world of the thrillers is something I recognize from my early years of getting lost in fiction and, as ever, with genre reading we recognize where we are and we like it or go home. Mary Stewart’s novels were my favorites, and I’ve read them all so I decided to explore others in the same vein. LIFE IN THE TIM OF COVID 19 FROM THE May 16 ISSUEIN THE Community
SECTION
_BY MARIA RUIZ_
I had never heard of it before March, 2020. First, the talk was all about coronavirus. I looked it up on Google and found that most influenzas were coronaviruses. Well, I don’t get any flu easily so I didn’t worry. Then, they found that this is a new virus, one that no one has any immunity for. HOW-TO GUIDE: HOW TO CLEAN CARBON STEEL WOK FROM THE May 15 ISSUEIN THE Food Fun
SECTION
_BY STAFF_
If you have a wok in your kitchen, you will agree that it is quite a fundamental tool in the cookware family. Carbon steel woks are regarded as the best kitchen tools mainly due to their ability to conduct multiple tasks. However, due to its frequent use, they tend to get dirty fast. As a result, you need to know how to clean them. IN PRAISE OF THE BACKYARD GARDEN FROM THE May 13 ISSUE IN THE Mysteryrat's MazeSECTION
_BY EVE CALDER_
Lately I’ve been craving a little time in the backyard garden. The only problem: I have neither. Not a backyard. And definitely nothing that qualifies as a “garden.” Unless you count the cluster of bamboo plants in my sunny living room. And, between you and me, they looked a lot healthier before I brought them home from the store. THE GREATEST DETECTIVES OF ALL FROM THE May 13 ISSUE IN THE Mysteryrat's MazeSECTION
_BY ANG POMPANO_
Thanks so much to Lorie Lewis Ham for inviting me here today. Over the years, I’ve written about many detectives in my short stories. All of them, both male and female, were in some way classic damaged gumshoes. Al DeSantis and his father, Big Al, in my debut novel, _When It’s Time for Leaving_,
are no exceptions. Al and his father have history and not all of it isgood.
