GRAPHING ACTIVITIES
Graphing is taught in three stages: Stage 1 – Begin by placing real things on a graphing mat or in a pocket chart. Stage 2 – Introduce pictorial graphs – place pictures that represent the real objects on a graph. Stage 3 – Symbolic graphs – using words, numbers or symbols to represent the data collected.SCIENCE LESSONS
Science and math go hand in hand. Have the children collect, display, and look over data as part of your science lessons. They will have opportunities to count, compare, measure, record and make sense of their observations. It is a great way to practice math skills and build a math vocabulary. Children are always eager to try new science TEACHING MEASUREMENT SKILLS Teaching measurement vocabulary. Strengthen the students’ measurement vocabulary by using measurement words often as they take part in daily kindergarten routines. Reinforce terms such as: taller, shorter, small, large, lighter, heavier, hotter, colder, warm and variations of the terms such as large, larger, largest, morning. BRINGING NATURE INTO THE CLASSROOM Nothing beats the benefits students gain from learning outside but if that’s just not feasible, bringing nature into the classroom gives children opportunities to value animals and plants. It gives kids time to wonder and ask questions and inspires them to investigate further. Once you get organized for bringing plants and animals inside anddiscover how
TEACHING MEASUREMENT TEACHING MEASUREMENT. Teaching measurement is fun! Provide lots of opportunities for your students to sort objects by size. Using everyday activities and experimenting with real objects help children understand measurement concepts. The terms non-standard and standard are often used when describing prescribed learning outcomes formeasurement.
COOKING IN THE CLASSROOM The process of preparing and cooking food fascinates children, not the final outcome. 2. Kids like to make their own thing. Choose a simple item where each child gets to either completely make or contributes to the finished product. Don’t worry if they don’t like the taste when it’s finished.TEACHING SYMMETRY
Procedure: Place a rod, such as the longest dowel stick in a Tinker Toy set in the middle of the mat. Child #1 puts one pattern block down on his/her side of the mat touching the rod. Child #2 copies by putting the same block in the same place but on the other side of the rod. Continue the game with 5 or six blocks and then remove theblocks.
TEN TERRIFIC MATH MANIPULATIVES 6. Two-sided counters. Two-sided counters are about one-inch in diameter and have one red side and one yellow side. These math manipulatives are great for teaching number sense and number operations. Put 5 in a container, have the children shake them, place them on the carpet or table, then count – 3 yellow and 2 red equals5 all together.
TEACHING DOUBLES
Teaching doubles with a math and literature connection is a wonderful way to introduce the concept. Minnie's Diner is a delightful and funny book about the five McFay brothers who are so tempted by the smells coming from the diner that they stop working and go inside for somefood.

Teaching literacy always begins with reading to your students, a fun and enjoyable activity for everyone. Give your students positive experiences with books, such as acting out the stories, creating story characters with craft materials, and responding to literature with art, music and drama. Make a few story characters with scraps of paper TEACHING SCIENCE TOPICS Acoustics, chemistry, electricity, magnetism, matter, mechanics, nuclear science, and optics are all categorized under physical science. PHONEMIC AWARENESS
Phonemic awareness activities help young children know that words are made of sounds. It is the skill of noticing, thinking about and working with individual sounds in words. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR KIDS Begin environmental education for kids as early as possible. Children's attitudes toward living things develop at a young age and they will imitate the attitudes and actions toward caring for the environment that you model for them. At learning centers time, work with one group of about 8 students using a pattern strip and two different coins. As children read their patterns and listen to the other children read their patterns, they become familiar with the names ofthe coins.

BEST TEACHING METHODS One of the best teaching methods is to motivate children by modeling enthusiasm and curiosity. Motivation comes from within (intrinsic) and from outside (extrinsic). Making too much fuss of any one child can result in a competitive attitude in the class. VISITING TIDEPOOLS
Rocks and algae can be very slippery. Have children wear shoes or boots with good traction. It is a good idea to start your visit to the tide pools at least one hour before low tide and keep an eye on rising tides, depending on where you live. 4. Have the student draw a picture with a dark felt, then color in with crayon to avoid covering up the words. COOKING IN THE CLASSROOM The process of preparing and cooking food fascinates children, not the final outcome. 2. Kids like to make their own thing. RESOURCES & ACTIVITIES FOR BUSY EDUCATORS INTERESTED IN REPLACING WORKSHEETS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN THROUGH REAL, MEANINGFULSITUATIONS...
As a teacher of young children, you know that there's only so much little kids can learn by listening and watching. They need to figure stuff out for themselves and have opportunities to talk and ask questions. They need to interact with others and have sensory experiences and have time to wonder. They need to solve problems andwiggle and _play_.
One key to successfully teaching children is to present topics in ways that are mindful of their natural inquisitiveness. A curriculum that offers children opportunities throughout the day to develop their ability to think abstractly, by experiencing real objects and using their senses, is necessary _before_ offering them abstract worksheets that typically have only one right answer per task. Children learn so well as they investigate and test real things, as they attempt a variety of ways of problem solving, and what's so great about it, is that they don't even realize they're learning. My goal is to provide you with hands on activities that give children some control over the direction of their learning, that allow them to touch, move, listen and observe and record their new knowledge.Details
