KHANYA COLLEGE
In response to the emerging outbreak of COVID-19, a considerable amount of effort in Khanya College has been devoted to reprogramming the work of the College so that it can respond and continue to pursue its mission of facilitating the struggles of the working class under the new conditions dictated by COVID-19. Khanya is aware that many WHO WE ARE – KHANYA COLLEGE WHO WE ARE. Khanya College is an independent non-governmental organisation based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Established in 1986, the primary aim of Khanya College is to assist various constituencies within working class and poor communities to respond to the challenges posed by the forces of economic and political globalisation. WHAT WE DO – KHANYA COLLEGE Creating platforms for networking, debate and solidarity; In the last few years the College has created such platforms for debate, which include the Khanya Journal, the Khanya Annual Winter School, participation in the Southern Africa Social Forum and the World Social Forum process, various publications, seminars and study groups, and the Jozi Book Fair Festival. SETSI SA MOSADI FEMINIST NETWORK Setsi Sa Mosadi Feminist Network – KHANYA COLLEGE. This is the space where women can educate, organise, build solidarity, and share their struggles and experiences while fighting against issues keeping women down. The Network meets monthly, every third (3 rd) Saturday from 8:30 am to 16:30 pm. In past meetings, the FemNet looked at: THE NEED FOR AN ALTERNATIVE PRESS The alternative press is an anti-capitalist press for the working class. The participants in the winter school were given an overnight reading titled ‘The Alternative Press’ by B Mpofu, to better understand the alternative press; how it was formed and how it ended up collapsing. The reporting of the story itself is not a problem, but similar IS NOT TIME FOR A FEMALE PRESIDENT? Every country has its own constitution that guides, rules and directs the country’s conduct and future. However, it seems the way things are the constitution favours one gender. Why do we always have male presidents in most countries? Are women not good enough to be presidents? People are afraid to ask these questions. SUMMARY ON SIMULATION A winter school first session (simulation session) took place on the 10th of June 2019 at Khanya college ground floor. The facilitators of the session were comrade Maria and comrade Dorothy, who guided the flow the session. All comrades had to greet people they dont know and to check how many people you can greet in the given time. Comrade Dorothy introduced the winter school team to WOMEN EMPOWERMENT Before Colonialism women were always under the protection and umbrella of a man. We live in a society where patriarchy is a norm and men continuously oppress women. Historically women were regarded as inferior and very primitive women were exploited by men. The duties of a woman were to bear children and work in the field and as well work in the house as a housewife. In the community ORGANISATION PROFILES OF SPAWUM Sugar Plantation and Allied Workers Union of Malawi (SPAWUM) was formed in 1994 and is orientated to the working class. The organisation has about 8500 members. Amongst those members, about 3500 are permanent employees while the other 5000 members are casual and seasonal workers. The organization is aimed at mobilizing workers and better wages for workers. The aims of Womxndla is to empower women of different age groups, improve women’s lifestyle and change how women’s’ issues are considered by society. Social Media is difficult to control as people post whatever they want and no one can be accountable for it. The Tsohang Batjha (TB) youth are taken through three themed workshop series exploring an aspect of theatre and drama. The last session of the workshop series will showcase the work the TB Youth did for the month.
