LETTER TO THE EDITOR: A NOTE ON DEMOCRACY AT KENYON I am going to suggest that there are two possible ways of defining democracy and that Kenyon does not match either of them. I will also argue that this is a problem that threatens the integrity of the College into the future. Please bear in mind that my remarks focus on the structure of decision making at the College, not on the quality of HORROR MOVIES CAN HELP US COPE WITH OUR OWN SCARY REALITY Horror movies can help us cope with our own scary reality. Horror has a way of naturalizing itself, of softening and blending into its surroundings until it is no longer horror, but the way things are. As COVID-19 has shown us, humans have a knack for adapting. Isolation isn’t as unbearable after two weeks of quarantining in my dorm room. KENYON COLLEGE’S OMINOUS HISTORY STILL SURVIVES ON CAMPUS One only has to do a topical Google search in order to discover that Kenyon may be haunted. In recent years, Kenyon has acquired a nationwide reputation for haunted buildings, unexplained deaths and other supernatural goings-on; the College ranks highly in a number of “Most Haunted Colleges” lists. Richard Serra’s sculptures have adorned a vast array of locations across the globe: the Qatari desert, the streets of New York City and the coast of New Zealand, to name a few. In June 2020, a new Serra sculpture will find a home in Gambier, Ohio. ROBERT FROST’S LAST PUBLIC APPEARANCE WAS AT KENYON’S During the fall semester of 1962, a legend stopped by Gambier on an October morning. Acclaimed American poet Robert Frost paid several visits to Kenyon, but one of his most notable appearances occurred on Oct. 28, 1962, when he dedicated the then-new Chalmers Library. Amidst multiple quiet periods, controversial quarantine procedures and various outbreaks, Kenyon has kept its COVID-19 numbers relatively low throughout the 2020-21 academic year: It has totaled 67 positive cases of COVID-19 among students, 57 of which occurred in the springsemester.
AMID PANDEMIC, ADMISSIONS NAVIGATES HEIGHT OF YIELD SEASON This season generally runs from mid-March, when decisions are released, until the beginning of May, when students have to make a decision. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: A NOTE ON DEMOCRACY AT KENYON I am going to suggest that there are two possible ways of defining democracy and that Kenyon does not match either of them. I will also argue that this is a problem that threatens the integrity of the College into the future. Please bear in mind that my remarks focus on the structure of decision making at the College, not on the quality of OHIO LAWMAKERS PROPOSE VOTER SUPPRESSION LEGISLATION Ohio lawmakers propose voter suppression laws. Legislation circulated among Ohio lawmakers last Thursday would overhaul the state’s voting system. The bill includes banning off-site ballot drop boxes, tightening voter ID requirements and eliminating a day of early voting. It would also make requesting a mail-in ballot onlinepossible, in

HORROR MOVIES CAN HELP US COPE WITH OUR OWN SCARY REALITY Horror movies can help us cope with our own scary reality. Horror has a way of naturalizing itself, of softening and blending into its surroundings until it is no longer horror, but the way things are.
