I am the founder and CEO of Eldarion which develops complex web applications for a range of clients in education, digital humanities, and more.. I have been developing open source software and working with web technologies since 1993 and have been using Python since1998.
JAMES TAUBER : CLEESE Cleese is a project to build a functioning operating system written almost entirely in Python. The basic idea is to have a microkernel mostly based on the Python VM and all other operating system functionality written in Python. JAMES TAUBER : PINAX Pinax is a Django project intended to provide a starting point for websites. By integrating numerous reusable Django apps to take care of the things that many sites have in common, it lets you focus on what makes your site different. JAMES TAUBER : POINCARÉ PROJECT Poincaré Project. I am currently working through the mathematics required to understand the Poincaré Conjecture and the possible solution recently proposed. I want to blog my journey and I started out summarising the basic foundations of pure mathematics necessary to get to the conjecture-specific parts. Now that I've got to explainingthe

JAMES TAUBER : SIX SNAPSHOTS OF A SIMPLE ECLIPSE GEF Back in March, I talked a little about my initial attempts writing an Eclipse Graphical Editor Framework (GEF) application.I wanted, then, to write a tutorial that essentially walked the reader through the various stages of the development of my first application. JAMES TAUBER : ECONOMICS PRECEPTS Jason Fried says his favourite economic precept is 'sunk cost'. I think sunk cost is mostly interesting because of the prevalence of the sunk cost fallacy where people say things like "I don't feel like going to the concert but I've already spent the money on the ticket so it would be a waste not to go".. This fallacy, like many in economics, comes down to not appreciating opportunity costJAMES TAUBER
James Tauber. I am the founder and CEO of Eldarion which develops complex web applications for a range of clients in education, digital humanities, and more. JAMES TAUBER : CLEESE Cleese is a project to build a functioning operating system written almost entirely in Python. The basic idea is to have a microkernel mostly based on the Python VM and all other operating system functionality written in Python. With Dave Long, I successfully built a proof-of-concept back in 2003.JAMES TAUBER : PYSO

JAMES TAUBER : WHY A-SHARP IS NOT B-FLAT What does B♭ mean? It means the third note of the scale. In 12-tone equal temperament, they may sound the same; you may play them the same on the piano or the guitar. But if the function of the note at a particular point in the piece is as the third note in the Gm scale, you can only write it B♭ and not A♯. A♯ means somethingcompletely
JAMES TAUBER : ANNOTATED WORD ASSOCIATION SKETCH Annotated Word Association Sketch. One of my favourite (and perhaps the cleverest) Monty Python sketch is John Cleese's Word Association . Below is a transcript of the sketch which I have annotated according to an initial analysis performed by my sister Jenni and I. There is an underlying talk being given and I have marked that up in bold. JAMES TAUBER : EXPLAINING CATEGORY THEORY WITH OBJECT So the post is pretty cool. But what I felt got in the way of using Java to explain category theory is that category theory is essentially about relationships between classes (in the OO sense—or least what OOA/OOD thinks of as what classes are supposed to map to in the real world). The objects in a category like Set are sets, not elements. JAMES TAUBER : PYTHON TUPLES ARE NOT JUST CONSTANT LISTS Greg Wilson is suggesting things Python 3000 could leave out and suggests tuples. In the comments, Phillip Eby holds him to task for the assumption that tuples are just constant lists: Tuples are not constant lists -- this is a common misconception. Lists are intended to be homogeneous sequences, while tuples are hetereogeneous datastructures.

JAMES TAUBER : LINGUISTICS I was accepted into the external PhD programme at the University of Essex but took a leave of absence to found Eldarion.. ------------------------- I am the founder and CEO of Eldarion which develops complex web applications for a range of clients in education, digital humanities, and more. I have been developing open source software and working with web technologies since 1993 and have been using Python since 1998. For the last twelve years, I have been working with Django. I am the creator and lead developer of Pinax. I do a lot of work at the intersection of computers and philology, especially in relation to Ancient and Biblical Greek but also old Germanic languages and Indo-European in general. I run the MorphGNT project and led the development of the new Scaife Digital Library Viewer . I'm an active contributor to the Open Greek and Latin Project and the Copenhagen Alliance for Open Biblical Resources. You can read a lot more about all this work at my other site jktauber.com . I am also interested in learning science and educational measurement, evaluation, statistics, and assessment. Some of this comes up on jktauber.com in the context of teaching Greek. I recently started a dedicated site on Modelling Music ("music theory and music notation with a twist of programming, mathematics, and linguistics") and Digital Tolkien ("Tolkien from both a linguistic and digital humanities perspective.") My first degree was in general linguistics. I recently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Ancient Greek (with Distinction), a Certificate in Educational Research Methodology, and a Certificate in Germanic Philology. In addition, I have completed over forty MOOCs on topics ranging from language teaching to astronomy to philosophy to molecular biology. I am currently finishing up a Professional Certificate in Music Theory and Composition at Berklee. For an eclectic mix of thoughts and updates relating to my professional and scholarly interests, subscribe to JOURNEYMAN OF SOME. * Linguistics and Greek* Modelling Music
