xThe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the entire medical education
process has been challenging. These changes may impact the next
generation of medical students, residents, surgeons, and surgeon
educators. We would like to thank Gambril et al for their interest
and thoughtful comments on our paper analyzing the medical school
admissions process in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grambil et
al show concern for students that are struggling academically or need
special attention. We agree that there is need for an evaluation of
the effect of virtual classes on academic performance, burnout rates,
social challenges, and strength of learning.

xAs the COVID-19 pandemic continues there is a question of whether
hospitals have adequate resources to manage patients. We aim to
investigate global hospital bed (HB), acute care bed (ACB), and
intensive care unit (ICU) bed capacity and determine any correlation
between these hospital resources and COVID-19 mortality.

xThe COVID-19 global pandemic has led to a halt in elective surgeries
throughout the United States and many other countries throughout the
world. Early reports suggest that COVID-19 patients undergoing surgery
have an increased risk of requiring ICU admission and overall

xDefining the work performed by emergency general surgery (EGS)
surgeons has relied on quantifying surgical interventions, failing to
include nonsurgical management performed. The purpose of this study
was to identify the extent of operative and nonoperative patient
management provided by an EGS service line in response to consults
from other hospital providers.

_MORE_
The Association for Academic Surgery is widely
recognized as an inclusive surgical organization. The impetus of the
membership remains research-based academic surgery, and to promote the
shared vision of research and academic pursuits through the exchange
of ideas between senior surgical residents, junior faculty and
established academic surgical professors.
The Society of Asian Academic Surgeons
(SAAS) was founded to focus on the personal and professional
development of Asian academic surgeons with the belief that the best
way to increase Asian representation in the leadership of academic
surgery is to prepare future generations to succeed.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY
The _Journal of Surgical Research_ welcomes original research focused
on minimally invasive surgery. Submit your MIS manuscript here

_JSR_ SEARCH FOR SOCIAL MEDIA EDITOR
The _Journal of Surgical Research (JSR)_ is currently accepting
applications for a Social Editor. The Social Media Editor plays a
crucial role in ensuring that the work featured in the journal reaches
the broadest possible audience of clinicians, scientists, and
educators interested in surgical science and academic career
development. The Social Media Editor will manage the journal’s
Twitter account to assist authors in promoting their work and to
advance the initiatives of JSR and its affiliated organizations, the
Association for Academic Surgery and the Society of Asian Academic
Surgeons. The position will afford the Editor the opportunity to
contribute at a very high level to the dissemination of peer-reviewed
scientific surgical literature and to join a group of individuals with
strong ties and interest in academic surgery. The editorial leadership
team meets twice each year, once via teleconference during the summer
and once in person at the Editorial Board Meeting held during the
American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress in October. The Social
Media Editor will be appointed for a 5-year term after which renewal
will be considered.
For this position, _JSR_ is seeking high-energy applicants with
expertise in social media platforms. Expertise in digital outreach
strategies and digital graphic design will be extremely valuable. The
applicant should have a strong publication record in the peer-reviewed
literature; scientific impact is more important than volume. Previous
experience as an ad-hoc reviewer for clinical and/or basic science
journals is preferred. Because _JSR_ is the official journal of the
Association for Academic Surgery and the Society of Asian Academic
Surgeons, candidates should have a history of participation in one or
both of these organizations.
If you are interested in being considered for this position, please
send a copy of your CV and a one-paragraph statement regarding your
interest, qualifications, and long-term goals to JSR@stellarmed.com
before 11:59 pm CT Monday, December 14, 2020.
