Each year, the editors of the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, & Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN) and Nursing for Women's Health (NWH), in concert with their Editorial Advisory Boards, elevate the outstanding scholarship of one paper from their respective journal's previous year's volume and acknowledge the contribution of the paper with either the Best of JOGNN award or the NWH Excellence in COMPARISON OF INTERMITTENT CATHETERIZATION TO CONTINUOUS Two hundred, forty-seven women completed the study. Eighty-one percent of participants gave birth vaginally, and 19% had cesarean births. The demographics of both the intermittent and continuous catheterization groups were similar for gestational age, age, and body mass index. MIDWIFERY - JOURNAL OF OBSTETRIC, GYNECOLOGIC & NEONATAL The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) supports midwives as independent providers of health care services for women and newborns. AWHONN supports a woman's right to choose and have access to a full range of providers and settings for pregnancy, birth, and women's health care. INCREASING USE OF THE PEANUT BALL IN LABOR The Johns Hopkins Hospital Perinatal Unit set a goal to decrease the number of primary cesareans performed on nulliparous women with singleton, term (>37 weeks) pregnancies in vertex presentation. There are nursing interventions that can decrease length of labor and incidence of cesarean birth. One intervention is the use of the peanutball.
IMPLEMENTATION OF A NURSE STAFFING ACUITY TOOL ON THE Staffing practice before implementation of the acuity tool was subjective in that the charge nurse determined staffing at the end of each shift for the oncoming shift, and decisions were made based on opinion and experience. Therefore, staffing was not consistent, which caused issues with budgeting and appropriate staffing from shift toshift.
NURSING MANAGEMENT OF THE PREGNANT PSYCHOTIC PATIENT Pregnant psychotic women are high‐risk patients who require both psychiatric and obstetric nursing expertise. Symptoms of psychosis are described, including disorganized thinking, impaired judgment, and distorted interpretations of reality. Various ways these symptoms can interfere with the labor and delivery process are discussed. NEONATAL SKIN CARE: CLINICAL OUTCOMES OF THE AWHONN/NANN To test the effectiveness of an evidence-based clinical practice guideline for neonatal skin care on selected clinical outcomes for newborns in neonatal intensive-care units (NICU), special-care units (SCU), and well-baby nurseries. BIRTH PLANS: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE FUTURE A written birth plan encourages women to clarify desires and expectations and communicate with their providers to make a realistic plan for care during labor. Tension between health professionals and patients caused by birth plans reflects the larger problems with contemporary maternity care: conflicting beliefs about birth, what constitutes safe, effective care, and ethical issues USING A MODEL FOR CHANGE MANAGEMENT TO INCREASE THE NURSE Certification allows nursing professionals to demonstrate their expertise in the specialty. Nurses with certification are respected among their peers and health care professionals. As public awareness increases, many patients will request certified nurses to be their care givers. As the acuity of patients increases, it is imperative nurses have the knowledge and skill to care for them. HOME PAGE: JOURNAL OF OBSTETRIC, GYNECOLOGIC & NEONATALHOMEVIRTUALISSUES
